My windows wouldn't take a window air conditioner if
I could find one and I don't want to pay for a
permanently installed one just to leave it
behind or pay a lot of money to have it moved.

I figure I can sell the portable easily if I need to.

A co-teacher helped me get a list of portable air
conditioners on the internet. These are on wheels
and have a hose that goes out the window
to emit the heat.

http://shopping.daum.net/product/searchresult.daum?&q=%BF%A1%BE%EE%C4%C1%20%B0%A1%B0%DD%BA%F1%B1%B3&scateid=GA010&autocvt=&page=1

Based on the specs I found the
best deals in terms of price and efficiency
are the 왈드코아 IMA series.

I noticed in the pictures they also have big wheels.
I like big wheels.

Anyone have any experience with these AC's?
Can I trust the numbers I found?
Would I ever know if they were wrong?

I calculated the efficiency by dividing the cooling
capacity (냉방능력) by the watts consumed (소비전력) during
cooling.

Some of the air conditioners I found could also run
backwards for heating. They weren't very efficient
as coolers so I'm not sure it would save you any
money in the long run.

IMA-0230S

333 000 won
cooling capacity 2300 watts
watts used 545 watts
ratio 3.56

IMA-0320S

380 000 won
cooling capacity 3200 watts
watts used 885 watts
ratio 3.61

IMA-0400S

449 000 won
cooling capacity 4000 watts
watts used 1050 watts
ratio 3.81

I was in LGMart and saw some that I *thought* were about 100,000 but it's possible I misread the zeros. They're the kind that are mounted on a wall, not a window.

Maybe the installation was extra. The real killer is you have to leave
it for the next tenant. That's why I want the portable.

Hey dude, I bought this one 2 weeks ago and it's great. ARP-904EC. WWW.ROYALSOVEREIN.COM

It's designed for an 8 pyong room. It's portable, no big installation (you do it yourself) and uses less electricity because it doesn't need an additional outside unit.

You don't have to remove the water every couple of hours like you do with the cheap ones. Got it on the net for 370 000W.

If you go with one that's not portable the installation fees are high.

Good luck.

I just paid 440,000 with installation for a permanant one. That is money lost but I figure living without one would be hell. What I cant figure out is why there wasnt one in the apartment in the first place.

Sorry dude that was just the manufacturer website. You need to do a Korean search on the web to purchase it. The prices vary by about 100 000 won but 370 000 is about the cheapest. I did see one for 350 000 but it was sold out.

Get a Korean friend to help you search for it.

This one is good for a room with a window not a balcony. The attachment it brings is made for sliding windows only not sliding doors.

The general rule is that you take your a/c with you when you leave so I would suggest getting a permanent one. The installation is usually included in the purchase provided that you have somewhere you can place the fan unit. They do charge extra if you have to hang the fan unit outside the window.

And if you hire movers to do your moving, they will not charge extra for taking down (and then re-installing the a/c). In my experience, the portable a/c's are sort of waste of money.

Using the same calculation I used for the other units I get a
ratio of 2.51 . Not very efficient compared to others of similar price.

Having an outside unit is only one factor in determining efficiency, but
I would expect one with an external unit to be more efficient.

Even with a sliding window I would still put some foam in the gap that
opens up between the window panes. If you want to keep a good seal
you are going to do taping and such. Just add a piece of foam to fit
it in the balcony opening.

I do see your point though. You really can't use the balcony door
if you have it all taped up with foam for your AC.

The price included installation? What's the model number and where
did you get it?

How much less would the mover be if you went with a company that
didn't give you the free AC re-installation? Could you have negotiated
a lower price if you didn't need them to move the AC?

What if you are going home and want to sell the AC. How much
would you have to knock off the price to get someone
to buy an AC they have to pay someone to install?
