I'd like to take a kind of measuring stick.

What would you think is a fair pay package for a public school position, specifically high school, which offers 12 weeks vacation per year and the regular 24 classes per week in term time?

Any opinions welcome. Especially those with jobs which match the above. |

As far as I know there are three pay levels, based on experience and qualifications.

Level 3 is 2.0m /month, 2 is 2.1m / month, level 1 is 2.3.

That's through GEPIK.

As an independent, I get paid 40,000 per class. With a normal schedule, it works out to about 3 mil per month. Sometimes more, sometimes less. My time off is unpaid (3 months), but the salary, schedule and other freedoms make up the difference.

Last year I had a contract rate of 2.7 but that included a 350,000 housing allowance. |

				| I have the same arrangement as you are being offered, I am paid at level 1. I work camps and make an extra 6 million or so (total for 2 camps). |

Do you get an apartment or housing allowance on top of that? Sorry to ask slightly personal questions. You don't have to answer. |

I would usually but they aren't offering anymore than level 3 pay (2.0) and NO housing allowance or apartment. Pay would be 1.8 after deductions. So, yeah, it's nice that vacation is paid, but nothing else is attractive. Well, except that it's a prestigious Foreign Language high school with excellent students. |

I work at a public elementary school and get 2.5m including a housing allowance. I have 11 weeks vacation and do not get paid extra for teaching their 2 week (4 hours a day) camp in the summer. However, the school allows me to work other camp jobs during the rest of the summer and winter vacations to make extra money.

Weigh what's important to you when you decide. I was offered an almost identical job, except that the average class size was 32 instead of 12. The pay was 250k more per month, but the vacation was only 6 weeks per year. I chose less money to have small classes and more vacation. Also, consider that you can likely work during that vacation time if you want more money. I'll be making 7m this summer working at a uni camp. With my regular salary after taxes, that's 11.5m for two months' work. I can take the full 5.5 weeks in the winter as vacation and still make 40m this year - which is way better than I was doing at a hagwon where I had to fight with my director for 5 days off in a row.

Good luck.

BTW, have you met any of the students at the school? You spend most of your day with them, and it makes a big difference to me what they're like.... |

Thanks. Good advice there guys.

I met the foreign teachers after my interview and they assured me the students were of a very high level and very motivated. They had to compete like hell to get into this school.

So, paid vacation=great, good students=great, 10am-4pm workday=great, pay=terrible.............I'm facing a tough decision. |

Just for balance (or to add fuel to the fire):

I have a base of 22 classes per week + 6 extra classes = 28 total.

I get 3 mil + housing + medical + pension + severance paid out yearly + airtickets + (last year almost 10 weeks paid vacation - 6 of which I was out of the country). |

Yes, they pay for my apartment. I had no deposit or key money to pay either. Just take my job in September (in Busan). |

That's a nice deal. Very nice!

I'm taking the job as it is the best step-up for me in a career sense. I'll have to swallow the meagre paycheck and just pick up a couple of privates (I'm an F2). Getting out a 4pm each day will give me ample time to teach elsewhere. |

12 weeks vacation, but gotta teach 4 weeks of summer classes(paid on top of my normal salary) + yearly severance.

8-4:30, 20 classes a week +10 extra classes a week (paid extra on top of salary).

High level students in a High School.

anything at 2.5 and higher (including housing allowance) is fair depending on your qualifications. Your extra classes +vacation should make up for the extra $$. |
