COLORADO CITY, Ariz. - In a dusty neighborhood under sheer sandstone cliffs studded with juniper on the Arizona-Utah border, a rare genetic disorder is spreading through polygamous families on a wave of inbreeding.
The twin border communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz., have the worlds highest known prevalence of fumarase deficiency, an enzyme irregularity that causes severe mental retardation brought on by cousin marriage, doctors say.

Had a VERY HOT first cousin growing up. Only in adulthood did I learn he was only a half.
Heck, I would have done his grandpa! |

And according to a wesbite dedicated to the subject...

Fact: No European country prohibits marriage between first cousins. It is also legal throughout Canada and Mexico to marry your cousin. The USA is the only western country with cousin marriage restrictions.

Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein were married to their first cousins, as I recall.

Yep, quite distant I think. Eleanor was Theodore Roosevelt's niece. Her maiden and married names were the same. |

It's marriage in a small group that does it. Not marrying cousins. |

This was written by one of my professors in college. In a lecture
he said that most medical people and geneticists just assumed
that cousin marriage was bad and never actually did the mathematical
calculations.
Basically only states formed after "social darwinism" became popular
have the anti cousin marriage laws. |

Yes, this is what I understand. Also, quite interestingly, I once read that genetic problems were more common between second cousins, than first cousins. Though I would like to see that verified. And I'm not sure if it was for problems in general, or just certain problems. |

Word....
French Canadians
Cajuns
Mennonites
The Amish
etc. etc.
They are all at a higher risk for certain genetic disorders due to a smaller gene pool. Not because they necessarily married their cousins... |
