I saw a new sticker preaching subway etiquette on the number 7 line the other day. I snapped a picture of it with my phone but it came out too blurry.

I liked this one.

It said (loosely translated)

Over there there is someone talking loudly on his/her phone.

Over there there is a man carrying a puppy.

Over there there is a man taking up lots of space with his legs.

Over there there is a student pretending to sleep.

And then a little more about what not to do on the subway (fold your newspaper in half, keep your phone on vibration mode, etc.

How could they forget to remind people not to snap their gum? It must have been written by an ajumma.

Are you sure that's what it said?

Yes. It said not to hold your newspaper out widely, and then it said what to do, fold it in half.

Did the sign say anything about shoving your arm in someone's face when they sit next to you?

"Please do not get angry at those who want to use the sit adjacent to yours."

I usually do my best to ignore this (impossible though it may be), but today I had confront a lady. I had never heard it so loud in all my days here. I just stared at her smacking my mouth in an obvious overly mocking gesture until she caught the hint. I mean seriously, I've never heard heard an ajjuma work so funking hard on piece of gum before.

Two summers ago I caught the Mugunghwa train from Jochiwon, near Cheongju, to Busan to get the ferry to Fukuoka and fly back to Australia from there. Pity me, I got seated in front of some old cow who snapped the same piece of gum from Daejon to Busan at ear-shattering decibels. I finally cracked during the last hour and went and sweated it out in between the cars.

This is the only reason why I bought an ipod. Also when I go and eat. Can't stand that either.

I find that once I notice the cracking, even an iPod can't completely cover up the noise. It cracks at just the right pitch. Laughing

Gum cracking? What the hell... You guys run out of stuff to complain about? Very Happy Maybe it is a Seoul only phenomenon. I have never heard this after two years here in Busan. Maybe I just haven't noticed it.

Don't think so, Denistron. I haven't noticed it, either, but a lot of people mention it on here. Another often lamented phenomenon is pushing and shoving. I haven't observed that very much at all, unless you count the sweaty 20 seconds before the bank opens up and 30 people are elbowing for position.

Maybe I'm just oblivious but those things have never caught my attention.

How can one crack ones gums anyway? Are they talking about the sound of mastication? Is it like eating with your mouth open? Does that sound involve gums? If anyone can record the sound please post it here.

gum = chewing gum. It's like a kind of smacking noise (lip smacking), like bubble gum without the bubbles.
