cosmicgirlie, there is plenty of info on public record that you can search and not difficult to find. you can also check out other sites' terms of use and compare what protections are in place for users. after doing the above, i couldn't quit fast enough

Which I'm sure there are public records--same probably could be said about MySpace and other social networking sites--it just appears that Facebook seems to have all these "rumours" going on about.

I'm not defending Facebook by any means--it's a highly addictive and evil site--just look at how many kids have been suspended from school for posting threatening or inappropriate things--and as they should be. Any parent that doesn't take that kind of threat serious is living in a fantasy land. I always laughed at parents on the tele going on about "how great their kid was and this was a stupid stunt"--well you're kid is not that great and Cyber bullying is Bullying period--get off your fantasy rock and smack some sh*t into that kid

It's a public forum--the internet is a highly public space and anything you post period is up for use or mis-use. The sooner you come to this realization and are at peace with it, the quicker you can move on with your daily activities. Be smart about what you put out there or it could be used against you period! Common sense folks, common sense!

The public forum/public space thing is a given on the internet. To be more specific, it's not who in cyberspace can ogle your life story that I'm concerned about. It's what you are giving site owners the permission to do by joining.

In comparing other sites' terms (and it's impossible to compare all but I did check a few biggies), there are definite, self imposed limitations on what they can do with your info and if you have the inclination and the where with all you can assert your rights in law.

My concern with FB, is that it doesn't have any limitations on what the Company can do with your info, does not specify the affiliations that they share your info with and when you check the terms box, you give them permission to gather any information on you from any source. Just read the terms.

This appears to be taking things a few disturbing steps further than what I can figure out has been the practice to date. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. This, coupled with the background checking I did, raised some big red flags. I can see why there are rumors and conspiracy theories floating about, whether rightly or wrongly.

Of course there are those who will hunt down info on people anyway (hell, I used to hunt down company info for an advertising department and I was pretty good at it), but that is not the same as giving permission to be thoroughly mined by a company with some mighty powerful connections.

And of course it's highly addictive. It wouldn't be much use if it wasn't.

Anyway, if anyone is concerned, do your own checking and don't just rely on message board rumor or even listen to me. If you're ok with what you find that's great, if not, you know what to do.

I just joined...can't find any of these 'old friends' that are suppose to be so easy to find on there!

If you have their 'email', you can find them. If I had all their emails, I wouldn't be looking for them on facebook!

You don't need their email. What are you talking about? Search for their name.

People actually put their real names in these things?

It's got potential stalker's dream written all over it. Whatever happened to not giving your real name and not giving too much personal information about yourself over public websites?

yeah, but they can't view your profile unless you approve them and let them. and you can limit them and only let them see what you want them to.
it's better than myspace because there aren't as many fakers. at least it used to be before they opened it up to everybody. i still only use it for my school network/classmates so I don't really know how things have changed.

How does one hide a profile on Facebook? As a new member, I am hopelessly lost.

You have to option not to use your real name on facebook, but facebook seems to encourage people to do so, a marketing practice which could charitably be referred to as irresonsible. Having said that, I think a lot of the responsibility should also fall on the users. If you don't want the wrong people to avidly look up information on you, set you profile to private AND don't put a whole lot of personal information about it. You want to blog about your binge drinking and drop F-Bombs on a public slelf described "sociall utility"? Do so at your own risk, and don't cry "big brother" if a prospective employer gets spooked. Likewise, posting detailed photos of your house, your street, your neighbors, your friends, your school, etc... should be a "do-at-your-own-risk" type practice.

It would be a nice gesture if Facebook would put a prominent safety PSA on their site, for the benefit of the sheltered suburban teens the site is clearly marketed to. On that note, I also suspect some Facebook members--- particularly the many "girls gone wild" wannabes--- kind of enjoy being cyberstalked by horny netizens, and are not yet old enough or wise enough to understand that some cyberstalkers can turn into real-life stalkers.

yeah, you should see how many of my korean and asian friends complain about dirty white guys stalking them on facebook and myspace etc...

they usually turn their profile to "private" because of their disgust. some even delete their profile because of the dirty white guys.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VQoJ6xDyojg

check out this funny segment on craigslist stalkers and how they expose like 70+ perverted white guys looking for an asian transvestite. Laughing

I hear ya. The little girl who lived across the alley from me when we were kids, now all growed up, Facebooked me out of the blue. "I quit my job doing AIDS research at Harvard so I can finally finish my doctorate in anthropology at UC Berkeley. So what are you up to these days?"

Jeee-zus.
