Hey all
ive just recieved an offer from wonderland and I remember someone had posted that their reputation wasn't the best. can you guys tell me if this is true. if so what has the problems been?

Also is there a blacklist of sorts floating around with the agencies who arent to be trusted

Read loads and loads of bad stories about wonderland.
Dont know if there all true, or if the people are just moaning f**%s.

Yes, Wonderland has a terrible reputation, but I've worked for two of them. They're better than the average hagwon, never had any problems that most hagwons have. Yes, there are a lot of stupid trivial things done at my school, but you'll find that just about anywhere.

Like all other hagwons, it's all down to the individual location. Does it have a good boss? A good owner? A good set of teachers?

Most will tell you to simply avoid Wonderlands like the plague, but I will only stress that you do your homework first, and do it thoroughly.

I can't agree more and can't stress that statement enough.

As a side comment - Public schools are hiring NOW.
Get on the bandwagon. At least there are no issues with pay, benefits and USUALLY not with housing.

IF you still decide to to with the hakwon...

Then, talk to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder).

No foreign staff references to talk to = walk away now. Accept NO EXCUSES for any reason.

The hard questions to ask AND get acceptable answers to ARE:

-What are the hours? (start time / stop time / breaks).

-How many classes per day, week, month? NOT hour many hours per month. 30 classroom hours can mean anything from 1350 -1800 minutes per week standing in front of the class. The difference can be up to 7.5 HOURS in front of the class EACH WEEK.

-Do they ALWAYS pay on time?

-Do they pay at the end of your month or do they have a hold back period (5-10 days after your month end) to prevent runners? (no=red flag 1)

-Do they really pay overtime or avoid it with creative book keeping?

-Do you get credit for classes on the national holidays or do you get the day off but still have to work your 120 hours before you get overtime? (no=red flag 2)

-Do they have national medical (with the little booklet)? (no=red flag 3)

-Do they pay into pension? (no=red flag 4)

-What about the holidays? 10 or more WORKING days? (legal requirement here) (no=red flag 5)

-When and how do you get your holidays?

-What extra stuff do you really have to do - mentioned or not in the contract.

-Then consider the quality of life issues - things that are important to you that aren't mentioned here (housing, furnishings, THE BATHROOM, access to recreational facilities, shopping, banking).
Do they take additional deposits in addition to the delay in payday? (yes=red flag 6)

I would also like to mention for comparason:

My co-worker who is a green as grass, fresh of the boat newbie gets a base salary of 2.1 mil per month for 22 classes of 40 minutes each.
She gets 20k won for each 40 minute class over 22 per week and works from 8:30-4:30 each day. She usually averages 26 classes per week and her salary works out to about 2.5 mil per month.

She also gets (as required by law and ignored by most hakwons) NHIC medical, pension, severance, non-shared housing, airfare and 4 weeks annual PAID vacation.

Do NOT be in a rush to sign anything. There is NO rush or urgency in spite of what your recruiter may tell you.

Take your time. The job (or more likely a better one) will still be there next week and probably next month too.

There are 30,000 openings in Korea each year and only about 25,000 applicants to fill those jobs each year.


PS - public schools are doing their recruitment now for the August 24 fall term school start if you don't want one of the horror stories about pay and benefits from a hakwon.

I had a great interview with a new wonderland, in Hapyong I think, and the owner and manager/teacher were very nice people.

Every school is different though. and the franchise name means nothing.
If it is run by good people who can manage a business, then they will take care of you.

Can you get a 1 on 1 interview, see the school etc.?

The only reason I chose not to, was they offered a nice rooftop room, but seeing as my wife was pregnant we couldn't accept it.

Never be rushed into anything.

is there a specific site for public schools and how to apply. Also does it matter that i dont live in korea at the moment (would public schools still fund my airfare etc)

The 3 main sites (programs) for public school hirings are:

GEPIK: http://gepik.ken.go.kr/r/bbs/board.php?bbs_code=f_notice
SMOE/ETIS: http://etis.sen.go.kr/
EPIK: is undergoing a change in management and I don't know where their website has moved to.

There are some recruiters who deal extensively with these programs. These include but are not limited to Worknplay and Footprints. There are a few others as well.

Look on the jobs postings area of this BBS ( http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/ ) and you will see them.

Send off your resume, cover letter, scans of your degree and passport information page. If you do not want hakwon work be VERY FIRM and clear in your cover letter that you are ONLY interested in a public school position (and don't accept an after school one - they are simply hakwon subcontracts).

AND

To answer your last question, they do reimburse your airfare (within a week or so of your arrival) but usually do not front the ticket.

They also give you a 300k settlement allowance within a few days of your arrival to help you fitting out your apartment with things that they don't have in there already (like towels and cleaning products).

Yeah, usually the name of a franchise school doesnt matter. However, Wonderland has a preponderance of bad juju going against them. I personally know someone who illegitimately got the shaft from them. I've read numerous complaints about various Wonderland branches on here. And then there was the infamous, "escape from wonderland" homepage written by a poor young woman who was vanquished from Wonderland.

Wonderland is a unique franchise with a specific set of managerial, financial, and ethical standards. Those standards purport to a working climate of hostility, indifference and lack of support, and resentment for FT's going to work there.

Wonderland is also almost unique in that it caters to parents of very very young learners --- arguably too young. Kids are dumped there by thier parents at age 3. Immersing your kid in a foreign language works great when that immersion is complete and unfettered by influence from the kids native language. But at Wonderland, FT's see the kids for a couple of hours per day, during which time they are scared to death by these big, incomprehensible adults shouting at them in another language not to pour milk on the kid sitting next to them.

Wonderland exists mainly as a place for rich moms who dont want parental responsibility to keep thier kids for the day, under the guise of "getting the kid starting learning English early". In reality, the kids learn very little and Wonderland is quite ineffective.

If you work there, you will have a miserable time and likely they will try to scrue you out of what they promised.

Picture an airliner on which this would happen:

- ten passengers would get food poisoning from their meals.
- ten would be seated beside violent drunks.
- ten would be seated beside screaming babies.
- ten would get vomited on.
- ten would have food spilled all over them.
- ten would have seatbelts that refused to release them.
- ten would get ejected mid-flight.
- ten would be taken to the wrong destination.
- ten would lose all their luggage and not be reimbursed.
- and ten would enjoy a passible, economy-class flight.

Would you be stupid enough to get on that plane? No? Then why would you be stupid enough to work for Wonderland?

the hours tend to be long and there are a lot of loopholes in the contracts like a working hour is not the same as a class so for example if you work 5 forty minute classes then this equals 4 working hours.

The amount of classes and babysitting make the school a terrible choice. You will also be required to do phone teaching and evaluations every month.

They also take a portion of the first 3 months salary as a deposit. Some of these schools require you to eat lunch with kids. Expect to be working between 7-11 (40 minute) classes per day.

Wonderland = 180 classes per month before overtime

Good school = 30 classes per week (120 per month) before overtime

Because Wonderland does classes per month, dont be surprised when your crooked hagwon boss scrounges up some classes for you, just to max you out.

You most likely will not be receiving medical or pension if you work here.
