-No I'm not but I lived there a year.
-After reading the "I'm not russian thread" I was wondering what is the Russian Social scene like in Korea. I hear there is a community in Busan, and since I won't be able to chat in Korean(considering I will have only studied it for 12 weeks when I arrive) is it easy to find conversations in Russian?
-Is the russian community exclusively criminal and 'entertainment' orriented? And what about Russian-Koreans? Are they also called [i]gyopos[ /i]?
-Thanks

If you go to Spy Bar in Itaewon, Seoul, lots of Russians hang out there (men and women).

There's a decent sized Russian community in Dongdaemun (central Seoul) as well, that seems a little less dodgy than what I've heard about the one in Busan.

It seems like there are a handful of Russians in every town in Korea, because I used to get asked "Are you Russian? in Russian nearly as often as I got asked the same question in broken English/ slurred Korean.

I've seen russians in the wierdest places here. The community around Dongdaemun is actually Uzbeki, btw.

-Oddly enough, when I was working in Russia, I tought at LG's Petersburg office. Anyhow they had two(and I really can't say this any better) ethnic koreans with uzbeki citizenship, who had migrated to Pieter after the break-up of the USSR. They spoke no Uzbek, and left the country. One of the women had gotten a special scholarship to go study in Seoul, and learnt Korean there.
-So this Uzbeki community, is it korean or uzbeki?

Most of the Russians here are factory workers. They don't have a "scene."

The russians here in Busan are sailors, entertainers, or "entertainers." For the most part anyway. Down on Texas Street (across from Busan station) is the "russian part" of town. I've never really explored around there, but thats what I hear. U2 in haeundae also gets some russians occasionally b/c the owner is russian. She's there pretty much every night if you are looking for someone to speak russian with.

Russians or people from former Soviet republics do a number of jobs here, from entertainer, model, factory worker and even English teacher.

There are Korean Russians here, though not as many as gyopos from North America and Japan.

The Uzbeks are both Russian-Uzbeks and Uzbek-Uzbeks. There might be some repatriated Korean-Uzbeks as well, but I wouldn't be able to tell them from Korean-Koreans. The Uzbek restaurants in Dongdaemun are pretty authentic. Not enough fat on the shashlik, but the plov is usually quite good. Some places even sell Baltika.

Check this thread for more info.

Baltika is very important to me. Do they have #7 or #3? Sounds like I will have plenty of opportunities to speak.
-And yeah the two spoke only Russian, the one had learned Korean as a second language. SHe said when she was in Korea everyone kept asking her questions in Korean, and she would say, I'm Russian, which confused them because she looked Korean(cause she was).
