Purple line - Gwanghwamun station (I am not sure of the exit number but they are all on the same intersection (one on each of the 4 corners). The exit you want is the same as the Kyobo Bookstore / Kyobo building. The embassy is 3 buildings North of the intersection on the east side of the street.
Come up the stairs and look for the riot police.
They will be surrounding the US embassy.
It really is hard to miss. |

I think it's exit 2. When you come out of the subway you'll should be on the Kyobo side turn so you are facing away from the little temple/shrine thing on the corner. Walk towards the big mountain/hill at the opposite end of the street. Eventually you'll see the riot police (all Koreans and young). The big brown stone wall is the Embassy compound. Do not turn down the side street there, that is for foreign nationals wanting travel visas. Stay on the same sidewalk you were on from the subway. The front gate is monitored.
Push the doorbell, they'll buzz you in. Show id, hand over bags for the x-ray, walk through the metal detector, surrender your phone/ipod/electronics and go on into the embassy itself which is beyond the parking lot. Go through the doors wave at the Korean man at the front desk, hang a left and go into the US citizen area, grab a number and wait.
I was there three times in one week becasue my wallet was stolen and needed a new passport. |
