OK, if you are from Pittsburg, you have half-a-right. The Browns-Steelers rivalry is right up there with OSU-Michigan.
I have only been to Pittsburg once but the UPitt area is quite nice! |
go blue!
i never knew that ichiro said such random things, but i don't often follow what he says. |

Could I say something about this comment?

On steroids:
"When you take steroids, it's not as if wings grow out of your back, and you start flying all over the place and stealing home runs (from hitters). The word cheating doesn't apply for me regarding steroids." |
I tried to find Ichiro's original comment in Japanese but couldn't. However, I would assume it went something along these lines: "ステロイドを使用しても、背中から羽が生えて空を飛べるようになるわけでもなく、本来ホームランになる打球を掴めるようになるわけでもない。ステロイドに関して言えば、私は不正行為にならないと思う。"
To my mind, the unspoken nuance is not one of condoning steroids, but one of how futile steroids are. I interpret Ichiro's statement as saying "Steroids aren't going to turn you into a superman, so why bother?" rather than "Steroids are a part of baseball so live with it". |

That is possible, but kinda doubt it. With Japanese they say one thing and can, and usually do, mean something completely different and at times not even related to the main topic like that bowling with the girlfriend comment. WTH?
That's just part of their culture. Movies? Novels? Forgetaboutit. Try reading Yasunari Kawabata or Yukio Mishima. Great novelists but come the end and your left dumbfounded and turn'n the book every which way go'n, "That's it?!"
I'm actually kinda surprised by his forward comments which is kind of unheard of in the Land of the Rising Umeboshi. Guess he's stretch'n those Americanized legs and freedoms. Or maybe he's going through his own bit of culture shock? Isn't there a song, "Turning Japanese" or something like that? Maybe we can reword that for good o'Ichiro.
Oh, those corky Japanese and their "mushin-no-shin", Mind of the no-mind!
That's one reason why I like Korea. Koreans may be more abrasive in manner, but you know where they and you stand and a smile is a real smile and frown is a real frown. |
