Hi all,

Considering coming to Korea for a year but have recently been diagnosed with hemochromatosis.

Wondering if anyone over there has this disease and if so have they been able to arrange for their phlembotomies?

Thank you.

Well - we knew you were male - but you may have just given away your age -

On average, men develop symptoms and are diagnosed between 30 to 50 years of age. For women, the average age of diagnosis is about 50.

The best treatment for Hemochromatosis is removing blood the same way it is drawn from donors at blood banks. Based on the severity of the iron overload, a pint of blood will be taken once or twice a week for several months to a year, and occasionally longer.

In Korea - there are many blood banks - so you can donate blood every 2~4 months - HOWEVER - since you are NOT korean ? - I think generally they do NOT like receiving foreigners blood..

so in order to do your phlebotomy (The act or practice of opening a vein by incision or puncture to remove blood) - you may just have to slice your wrists once every 3 months.......

You are supposed to give (get out of your body) a pint of blood every 2 to 4 months for life, DO NOT take iron or vitamin C supplements, (EASY) DO not consume alcoholic beverages or raw seafood.

Korean culture to a certain extent (for men) evolves around consuming alcohol and raw seafood - I guess you will just have to avoid it.......

To be honest - I recommend not coming here - you need constant checkups at your doctor for your iron levels - and constant phlebotomy (draining blood out of your body) every couple of months... it could be very expensive here - and finding a hospital or doctor who wants to drain the blood from your body every couple of months could be hard - as Hemochromatosis is mainly a "caucasian" disease - and not common amongst asian people....

Korean blood banks will take your blood.

Fill out the forms just like everyone else and you can get your blood taken out of you.

I heard Korean blood banks won't take foreigners blood. I've been tempted to test that myth on a couple of occasions given the fact that I used to give every couple of months in the States.

You want to be so definite about that? This is Korea after all, when are rules, or anything for that matter, really consistently followed?

My friend gave blood and it was before he had been here a year. This was in Jeonju, by the way....

what agency did he donate through? i gave mine through the korean red cross (in shinchon). they insisted this was the only way to do it. sure it might be different at different locations/agencies. this is just my experience.

I believe it was a red cross but Ican say it is with 100% certainty. And this was a while ago, so the rules might have changed after the fact.
