One of my classes is doing some reading on American pop culture in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80;s, and 90's. I figured it would be nice to show them some of what we're reading about (the fashion/music/dancing) but I feel I may be missing something for each decade. Right now I'm thinking:

50's = Grease
60's = perhaps Forest Gump, but there must be something better
70's = Saturday Night Fever
80's = Sixteen Candles/ The Wedding Singer
90's = Smells Like Teen Spirit Video / (need something hip hop)

Is there anything better out there? What would you reccomend? Keep in mind though, these are 12-13 year old kids.

The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman as the recently-graduated Wesleyan University or Williams or Amherst College dude from Long Island, New York could be a good film for examining upper-middle class East Coast America in the mid-sixties.

Valley Girl is a killer take on early '80s Southern California, dude! Like, do it up for sher!

Everyone picked some great movies but I would be concerned that some of your choices are not appropriate for children.

And, while I think teaching culture is an essential part of language teaching, some of these movies have some very difficult themes for Koreans to understand. You may want to pick something a little more simpler and positive (by Korean standards) unless they are very advanced students. You don't want Koreans to think we are any more sex-starved, never study and even violent than they already think we are.

On the other hand, I don't really have any movies to suggest. If they are children, I would start with animated movies.

Good luck and screen first before showing.

90s - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Kindergarten Cop

80s - Three Men and A Baby...or its sequel
Look who's talking? or its sequel

I'm surprised no one mentioned La Bamba or an Elvis Presley movie or a beach movie with Annette Funicello...

How about some TV shows...I can rattle off TV shows much faster than movies...

Happy Days
The Hogan Family
Family Ties
Fame (That would be a good movie too!)
Nightrider (The Hoff at his greatest...hehe)
Saved by the Bell
Living Single (A success show from the 90s...Similar to Friends but with Black people!)
Martin

Good luck!

Good luck!
