I was just told me a recruiter that 2.5 million wons was an unlikely salary for a newbie with tons of experience. Also, the recruiter told me that i can make extra money by tutoring on the side (RED FLAG...I thought this was illegal and could lead in deportation)

Both are true. I would shoot for 2.2. You could get a legal part time job at another school/hogwan, but you can't tutor if you are on an E2

But I dealt with no recruiter to get the job. The job was posted by the Hagwon owner himself. This was last year. I noticed now, however--not much 2.5 job offers out there, or much postings of them...

I have my reservations about believing recruiters, or even anyone who offers a teaching position in Korea, but this is all subjective...

Don't believe 2.5 isn't possible...you just got to keep searching--it's out there.

This batch of newbies is in for a big surprise when they set foot to korea!

I have tonnes of experience teaching ESL, a degree in Linguistics and a TEFL cert. Before I started looking I also thought that I would be able to make a lot more than your average teacher. It seems like most hagwans don't care about experience or certification, they just want a warm, white body in their classrooms. Public School seems to be almost the only place where experience and certification count. Of course if I had wanted to spend a lot more time looking, or go to Korea and look for a job there maybe I could have found something.
