hey, unfortunately I think the system requires you to "encode" the hangul, not sure what that means but I heard it before. Until then the characters will appear as #'s, even though I enabled hangul read on here... thanx.

I stayed at a HaSook in Shinchon for 6 months.. its very very close to Hyundai Department Store.. basically its on the same block as KFC.. but follow it around the corner, and its the first hasook you see above a NoRaeBang.. 400,000 won plus two meals a day. I had all the privacy I wanted as my floor was more like an apartment building setup.. and the kitchen was on the floor above it.. small room.. but I had one of the window room overlooking the street.. great location!!

Generally, koshiwahns and hasooks are hit and miss as to which ones are acceptable for overnight guests.. you just have to view many and find one.. most are a miss.. but you gotta keep looking if thats the case..

Also, there are 100s and 100s and 100s all over the place in Shinchon, HongDae, and everywhere imbetween.. and for me, that was the most desireable area to live in Seoul.

Another option you might want to consider is checking out the 'Seoul Classifieds' which you can pick up at over half of the bars in Itaewon and look for apartment ads or roommate ads..

Another great option is go to Yonsei or Sogang Universities (both are universities in Shinchon).. go the the 'Foreign Language Department' or the 'Korean for Foreigners' office.. and they both have fairly large bulletin boards with alot of rooms, apartments, or shares that you can find.. all in the area as well..

Dudes (and Dudettes),

I lived in 아현 고시원 for several months and loved every minute of it!

By the way, I recommend Ahyeon as being roughly midway between Gwanghwamun and Hongdae. You're not too far in either direction. In fact, if you want the exercise, you can hoof it. (As I have done, many many times, in both directions.)

Now I've got a spacious two-bedroom pad all to my lonesome and am oddly and unaccountably homesick for the dear old goshiwon.

It can't be forever, of course, but a goshiwon for a time is an experience to be had, and not entirely a bad one.

My two cents.
