The sinking ship is starting to see the rats jumping off!

NEW YORK - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg left the Republican Party on Tuesday and switched to unaffiliated, a move certain to be seen as a prelude to an independent presidential bid that would upend the 2008 race.

The billionaire former CEO, who was a lifelong Democrat before he switched to the Republican Party in 2001 for his first mayoral run, said the change in his voter registration does not mean he is running for president.

"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city," Bloomberg said.

Wait, this dufus switched from Dem to Republican only six years ago and now he switches to unaffiliated? Yeah, I'm really worried about a guy who switches parties to give himself a better chance of being elected. This guy's a Guliani wannabe...

He only became a Republican to ensure he had an easy path to New York's mayorship, didn't he? The idea being that the Democratic primary for the mayorship is so cut-throat, that he would not have made it through the primaries. Plus, whoever made it through the Democratic primary bloodbath would be "damaged goods" and prone to lose to a "moderate" Republican that he could become.

Then again, you look at his record, he's always been a wild card maverick ... maybe someone like this is what we need.

I won't vote for him, though. Back of my mind, I'd always think, hey, there's billionaire who wants to buy the White House. Thing is, the building belongs to me, and the rest of America - WE decide who lives there.

There have been very few examples of self-financed presidential campaigns that were successful, so I think I'm not unique in this attitude ...

Cool

He's smart enough to know that he can only win if the Republicans nominate someone hard right, since if a relatively moderate Republican wins he wouldn't have a hope.

I'd vote for him if the dems nominate Hillary...
