If you're a girl, you're expected to smoke only indoors. Be prepared for dirty looks if you're walking down the street with a cig.

Man, it just gets better and better for the wife here. Anything else she needs to know?

Since your wife is blonde, you might want to read these two posts:

I can't say I took the time to read all the previous posts, but here's my bit:

2+ years in Korea, "assaulted" twice. I am (or was, explanation to follow..) a tall, blonde female from the USA.

First time was when I was walking home at night from my friend's house, a route I took pretty much every night. It was fairly late, but this was in Bundang, come on. Two ajosshi businessmen on a corner of the street playing with themselves, junk out for everyone to see (though at that time of night, there weren't many people). I didn't see what they were doing until I was almost upon them. They caught sight of me and grabbed me, started trying to pull me off of the sidewalk into a kind of dark bushy area. They didn't expect me to fight back though - kicked them a few times, whacked one of them over the head with my bag of apples, and they released me and I ran.

Second time was about six months later, I was in the elevator of my officetel building. In the basement of my building there are a bunch of casinos, so there are often drunk ajosshis hanging around late. I got on the elevator on the first floor and there were two of them on there. I had to go up to the 6th floor. One of them started gesturing towards me and laughing "Russia" to his buddy.. then he came over and ran his hand down my shoulder. When I brushed him off he got pissed and slammed me into the wall of the elevator a few times before his friend pulled him off of me. Again I got off and ran, but I got a big green bruise on my cheek and even small scar to remind me of the fun times I've had here.

So because both incidents ended with my running, there was no result from any sort of law enforcement. The only result has been my dyeing my hair dark brown. Nothing's happened since then, I don't get called Russian any more, and I feel a little more anonymous.

Hair is going back to blonde as soon as my time here is done, though...

Are you blond? I used to live in a small city and one girl had terrible problems because everyone thought she was a Russian prostitute and this she claimed, was because of her hair color. The people in her apartment building hated her and she got harassed on the streets. It was that sort of place lots of navy guys there, huge demand

Tell me I'm wrong, please, but, on the books, women smoking without a roof over their head, bus stops and the like would be okay, is illegal. So I heard from a k-girl, not that it's enforced.

I know. I read them already. I even made her read them and she doesn't care. She would like to learn how to say, "What the *beep* do you think you're doing?" in Korean, though. Laughing That's her usual response whenever some drunken sot accosts her.

Your right to smoke extends to the only point where it interfers with my right to breath and not beyond.

AHOY! Smoke yer brains out here in the Land of the Morning CabbageStink, but get it done while ya can...a lot of places are going to go smoke-free in a year, TOPS. Old-school hofs will be the last outposts for tobacco shenanigans. Crikey, it'll be illegal to smoke at or near a bus stop from this September!

If California can't enforce their no-smoking ban in public areas, then I doubt Korea will be able to.

So smoking is really that prevelant in South Korea?? That's the best news I've heard all day! I have actually been down in the dumps a bit because I heard something about a strict smoking ban being in effect in Korea. Is this not true or do people just ignore it?

I see you are in Korea now incognito, what have you found to be true? I agree that it will be very nice not to be treated like a second class citizen (again, purely because of the smoking).

A country that still has some freedom, can it be true??

Women don't smoke in public in Korea, except maybe in bars, and even then it gets them the rep of being "bad"( though that's generally a good thing in that context, hmm)

Otherwise, in public places, they go to have a smoke in the washrooms. AShtrays and often matches in most stalls.

Good thing? How so? I mean I can see that many guys find the "bad" thing sexy so I guess if they are going for that sort of thing, the added stereotype there could be helpful. However, I'm sure there are women who enjoy smoking in Korea and do not want the "bad" label, and I'm sure they will not think that's a very good thing.
