Hello! My name is Elena Pizarro, I'm a filmmaker and at one time, was an expat like yourselves, teaching EFL in Korea (Ulsan, 2002-2003). I'm making a documentary about the extraordinary lives of EFL teachers in Korea, and I would like to interview as many of you as I can! I want honest stories, impressions, thoughts, rants, whatever you are feeling and comfortable expressing.

I will be in Korea from 7/18 - 8/5. If you are interested in participating, please email me or send a message through the forum.

You can see the project's full description and the chronicle of getting this project off the ground at www.koreadreambus.com

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

$?

One issue you may face is that many uni and public school teachers may be absent during a lot of your time, either for vacation or summer English camps. I bet the issues and opinions you find between uni and public school teachers vs. hogwan teachers are vast, keep that in mind.

Yes, I am hoping for a variety of teaching experiences - hakwan, uni, public school, etc.

No $$, unfortunately. Most documentary subjects don't get paid for appearing, and anyway this is a lo-budget production. But eventually this film will hit distribution outlets and everyone and anyone who participates will get a credit and their 15 minutes of fame.

The ex-pat EFL life is extraordinary, in my opinion. If you disagree, maybe you could tell me how it isn't all that for the film! Wink

My main purpose is to examine why people come to Korea, why they leave, why they stay, and how they change as people. There's a fair amount of soul-searching involved with this film.

If you lost your soul in Korea, why not tell your story?

I'd definitely do it... I have a lot to say. More about why I came than what I've experienced because I'm pretty fresh here.

Though, I'm assuming you're looking for people in their second/third/fifth years?

What about Bibitybop's point about public school and university teachers being largely unavailable during that time? That's important. You'll wanna have a reflective cast of participants. If you just speak to a bunch of miserable, alcoholic, chain-smoking hagwon cowboys, your movie will be a pointless, sad charade.

True. On the other hand, bad news sells better than good news. Who wants to see a documentary where people say "I love South Korea"?

Come to think of it who wants to see a documentary about expats in South Korea, period?

Sorry my visa only allows me to say positive things about Korea. You don't work for immigration do you?

Perhaps my people can meet with your people ... Of course, I'd want creative control over the final cut Razz ...

Did I mention that I played a featured extra role as a pyscho inmate in the violent wing of a prison in the film Instinct? ... Anthony Hopkins was so impressed by my inspired portrayal that he went out of his way to shake my hand...

While I know you were joking, it's possible that being in a documentary would be considered breaking the terms of your visa. Unless I've heard wrong, even doing volunteer work is (supposedly) breaking your visa. Not that Korean enforces these laws very often, but still...
