every june the weather systems shift from the northwest to the southwest, usually bringing rains upward, however it's been two weeks since the shift (i check satellite images almost daily) and relatively little rain, a few systems passing just south of the peninsula

in 2003 and 2004 the streets were flooded, i recall having my dress pants rolled up to my knees, shoes and socks in a plastic bag, slogging through the nonstop rains

last year was mild

the rains end by the last week of july, after which typhoons from the south and a bit southeast (vs. southwest monsoons now) will be a factor from time to time, though only rainy windy tail ends of typhoons hit last year

I'll be arriving on July 30th...does this mean that I'll have just missed the worst of the rains? One can only hope...Mother Nature is so unpredictable.

Yes you will have missed the monsoons, if the last four summers are any indication.

Many companies have a week vacation during the end of July/beginning of August because it is predictably good weather, as there is a couple of weeks between the end of the monsoons from the southwest and the beginning of the typhoons from the south and bit southeast.

Last july a rare early typhoon was predicted to be making its way up here from taiwan but, as is typical of that time of year, it turned before korea.

Coming July 30th is a great time. Except for the scorching heat. Good time to go camping and hanging out at the beach for swim cool downs.

and really a pleasant start to the rainy season given the heat of the past few days. looks like this batch of rain will only last through the nite with only 5-30 mm rain for seoul

for the newbies it wont rain every day for the next month, in fact mon and tues should be nice next week.

its funny the way afn "warns" people of the monsoon season, they portray it as the second flood

glad i wont be here for the hot part, the humidity afterwards is miserable, i'll be on a beach in thailand Very Happy

In a taxi today, a lady on the radio said today is the first day of monsoon season. I have got to hurry and get some rain boots.

Was last year mild? I guess, as I remember pleasant weather in June and July. In mid-July, though, after moving out of my apartment I was in a motel in Seoul and basically stuck there as it rained 3 days straight. I remember watching news reports on vacation and seeing Seoul flooded. What generally happens, it seems, is we have nice weather during the week when I'm in school, and then we have terrible weather on weekends and on national holidays.

What's the deal with predictions of a short monsoon season (on the order of only 7-10 days long, then a break, then a resumption)? I've heard tell of something to this effect from a few different mouths.

A pretty girl invited me to go swimming with her after the rains are over, so I am particularly interested in the conclusion to the rainy weather.

Haven't seen much rain as of yet, but where can you buy men's rain boots?

i've heard someone else mention how last year was mild, man, hate to think what could be worse... i thought it was much more wet than 2005. there really is only one torrential week of rain... then its sporadic for 3-4 weeks after... pretty gray, pretty disgustingly humid... at least that's what its been the last few years i've been here. so true about the weekends always being the worst of it... drove me crazy last year.

I'm so happy to be able to leave during July and August. I can't stand the torrents.

From what I remember, the heat and humidity are even worse in Thailand during that time of year. However, it's still Thailand, and you're still on the beach. Very Happy
