So, I hear that Koreans are big fans of American TV shows like Sex and the City, Friends and LOST. What other American shows are popular among Koreans?

Sex and the City - It's about four single women in their thirties living in NYC...they bed multiple partners (not necessarily at the same time); they like to smoke, drink and party; they're in their thirties and unmarried and they have children out of wedlock. It's one of my favorite shows of all time (lol), but I wonder how native Korean women can relate to Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.

LOST - Even us Americans have trouble comprehending this show at times, so how do the native Koreans keep up with all the bizarre plot twists and clear lack of explanation? Do they simply watch because of Sun and Jin?

Prison Break - Everyone's in love with the actor playing Michael Scofield. He even came to Korea recently.

Battlestar Galactica - Fox Korea is considering renaming itself the Battlestar Galactica Channel.

Ghost n' Crime (English name: Medium) - The story of a real life psychic fantasising that her powers are real.

Cheaters - Probably the basis for a lot of what they think about us.

Wentworth Miller is the actor on Prison Break that you mentioned. I watched the first season because I found the show entertaining...and yes, Mr. Miller provided some nice eye candy. Cool However, towards the end of that season, I just couldn't swallow the impossible plot twists anymore. Suspension of disbelief is one thing...utter fantasy is another.

Do they have HBO in Korea? Or do shows like Sex and the City only appear in syndication?

Yes, as Korean women are all conservative and virgins, perhaps they are just living vicariously through this show Rolling Eyes Two words: love motel.

I didn't say that all Korean women are conservative virgins. But at the same time, I don't think most Korean women would respect a woman who smokes, has a gay best friend, sleeps around with men and decides to have a child out of wedlock.

Then again, a lot of American women probably wouldn't respect the woman I just described either. Go figure.

When I came here back in '04, I remember seeing Queer as Folk and being quite confused. Why was it shown here? But I figure there are no gay Koreans so the show won't get anyone thinking about batting for the other team. And now in '07, they show the L Word.

Law and Order, Law and Order SVU and Law and Order C.I. are all shown here on a fairly regular basis now.

Wrestling in very popular here. WWE and TNA are both shown here. And of course Ultimate Fighting.

Lots of reality shows as well. In '04, I could watch extreme makeover and I vaguely remember there was a Korean version of that show as well. The Biggest Loser, America's Next Top Model, Hell's Kitchen, Project Runway, Top Chef, Beauty and the Geek, The Next Pussycat Doll (It's so bad it's good Embarassed ) etc. etc. are shpw here but I don't know how popular they are but they are (or were) shown in fairly heavy rotation in my opinion....

"CSI" and "Prison Break" are very big here.

My adults students mention those two shows a lot.

I've also had a student who really liked "24," and some students that were in the Korean military who liked "E-Ring."

Everyone loves Hollywood...

Cool
