|

I plan to start the second week of August at a public high school outside Seoul. I've sent all necessary documents to the recruiter and she's passed them along to the school. I asked when I could expect to get the number that I need to get the visa from the consulate and she said the school wouldn't process my paperwork with the ROK government until the end of July because "it's too early to do that now."
I'm wondering if this is correct? I ask because I'm hesitant to give notice at my job here or buy a plane ticket until I know for sure the visa is in my hand. However, getting a ticket and giving notice are things I'd like to do sooner rather than later.
I'd read somewhere on here that the whole process can take 3-4 weeks from start to finish. Should I press the recruiter to get the process started or lay low for a few weeks and hassle her at the beginning of July?
Bottom line: I don't want to buy a ticket until I have that visa. Is that too paranoid of me? It just seems like it's asking for something bad to happen.
Thnx. |

| Did you sign a contract yet? They should buy your ticket. The visa process does take a while. |

If you are going to be working at a public school
AND
They want you for the start of the new semester
they will start the processing in MID July. It takes 12-21 days to process INCLUDING the shipping time for documents from home to here.
If they have the documents already the time is 4-7 days to get the visa confirmation number and 2-5 days for you to get the visa in your passport once you get the number.
Don't buy your plane ticket until you have the visa confirmation number.
You can give notice to your employer that you will be leaving work at the end of July or first week of August. |

The E2 visa is valid for entry to Korea anytime until 4 months after it is issued ... so in that sense there is no reason for them to delay applying for the visa ... because there is a 4 months timeframe after it is in your passport for you to actually start your contract ...
It is also true that you can often get cheaper airfares when you have a longer timeframe rather than buying them just before you leave. I also think it is not unreasonable for you to have the confirmation that this job is going to actually happen for you ... and they are not going to change their mind about you later on... before you give the notice you need to give.
Maybe try the "I want to get the cheapest ticket I can" line and tell them that you will only buy the ticket after the visa is in your passport. That is not unreasonable. When I came and it looked like they were going to buy my ticket ... they did not start looking for the ticket until after the visa was in my passport ...
