I'm preparing to go teach, and I wanted to know if anyone could give me advice as to what items I should definitely bring with me. I don't want to take too much, but not too little either.

By the way, how are we going to communicate with the children if I don't speak Korean, and they don't speak English?

PLease be a little more specific. Do you have a job yet? Have you started interviewing yet? Your employer will be able to tell you if there's a curriculum (sp?), meaning you shouldn't have to bring too many materials.

There are tons of threads about what to bring. Please read the stickies in the FAQ forum. The next time I go back home I thik I'll pick up some cheap pieces of Americana to show my students, and probably some stickers or things to use as bonus points in class. I think I'll also buy a few English children's books, as it's hard to find authentic English resources for kindergarten classes.

Also, I would recommend browsing the forums for a while to get the gist of what teaching in Korea is like. Most of us deal with students who speak no English. Again, you should have an idea of what age groups and levels you'll be teaching before you come here.

There are posts about Gwangju on almost a weekly basis. Search for Gwangju and you'll find all the information you need. Also check out http://wiki.galbijim.com/Gwangju for a good Gwangju page.

Watch out for Chun Doo-hwan. Also, Gwangju people are generally considered by most Koreans to have mental problems. Otherwise, bring whatever you don't want to purchase. There's really nothing essential you can't find in Korea. Unfortunately, it's just like living in the US or Canada etc for the most part. People even wear the ubiquitous British style suits etc and eat at TGI Fridays.

You should have some help from Korean teachers. Teaching is usually the easy part. Dealing with the management is usually where the problems lie.
