At the end of August I'll be finishing up my contact and heading back to Canada. It's been a pretty exhausting year so I thought I would go to Thailand for a one week vacation to unwind before going home. Are schools generally open-minded about paying for airfare if it's not direct from Korea. I figure I could pay my own freight to Thailand and just get the school to pay for my ticket from Thailand to Canada. Is that how it's usually done?

you should negotiate directly with your employer. there is no standard, and typically all matters like this are done on a case by case basis. you may get $1000 and your coworkers get $1500. it is all about splitting hairs and negotiation. i would negotiate for money for a one way ticket back to home/point of hire. don't indicate that you expect your employee to in any way fund your trip (unless you're leaving that employer for good in which case you have nothing to lose). just simply walk in and say 'i want to go to thailand on my way home. what can we work out?'

I think that many schools don't book return flights - the teacher books his-or-her own flight, and the school reimburses whatever amount they agree to (after seeing the receipt for airfare...)
