Hello all, this is my first time posting here, but i must admit I'm a long-time "lurker"....

I'm a teacher in the States with some experience- both in teaching native speakers and some ESL. However, my recruiter keeps pushing the same Hagwons on me. Particuarly the SLP located in Seonbuk. I've heard a lot of bad stuff about SLP, but not at this particular location. In fact, Ive heard nothing good or bad about the Seonbuk location.

Ive also heard some good things about SLP. So what i really want to know, is SLP really that bad of a hakwon rap for a new teacher in Korea? I mean, as far as being paid on time and getting ok housing. I'm aware that the most predicatable jobs are public school and uni-jobs, but it doesnt seem to be possible to land one of those this time of year (im looking for an august of september start date).

I know SLP's reputation for being "Slave Labor", but in all honesty, aside from working 10-15 hours more a week, is there anything else super-bad about them? Anyone have any info on this particular branch? Also, if worse comes to worse, does being with a franchise make it easier to get a letter of release (seeing as how they have a whole line of bodies waiting in line from recruiters?)

Also, I'd really like to be in Seoul, but Im aware that it might be possible to get a public school job in a rural area even this time of year. Would you recommend it? Keep in mind, Ive been set on Seoul from the beginning.

Any help or advice anyone could offer would be much appreciated

thanks in advance!!

I was too lazy to post the next several hundred.

I worked for SLP and stongly advise ANY and EVERYONE who is even thinking of it to have second thoughts, READ the contract VERY carefully and then tear it up.

Public schools are looking now for AUGUST and SEPT starts.

If you sign on at an SLP....
You will NOT get medical or pension for sure.
You will work twice as long for 20% less money FOR SURE.
You will be OVER TAXED for sure.
You will be CHEATED out of your overtime for sure.

Don't let any recruiter snow you into an SLP. It is a sh!t chain with a *beep* contract and you will regret working there. It is a 100% money lost, double your hours, slave labor guaranteed promise.

Is that polarized enough for you?

.

try posting your resume instead of using a recruiter. That way you will be contacted directly by the schools.

I posted my resume and within 24 hours was invited to apply to CDI, POLY, and MoonKkang among others, most of which were reputable, one of which i signed with.

All recruiters i used offered me crap jobs with even worse contracts all paying about 2.0

I don't really see the point in using a recruiter.

i generally ignore jobs posted by recruiters. most organizations that have their sh*t together have no need for recruiters.

SLP is a bad hogwan chain. Stay away.

I know two "teachers" who work at an SLP. They are in bad apartments and are stuck with horrible workloads.

Sorry but that's just not true...at least of SLP bupyeong. I had a more or less positive experience, was covered w/ medical, got my pension fine, didn't feel I was overworked, wasn't overtaxed, and never felt cheated...

that said, i didn't re-sign and i'm now at a public school. but it's not a bad place to get your feet wet, IMO.

And of course, every branch is different...

Oh, and my apartment was huge compared to most other expats. Three times the size of the one I have now.

"Workloads". What is that anyway? What do they have to do?

I agree. I recruit for two SLP's and their apartments are very nice. The offer medical and pension and give average hours. Not great, but average.

So far, the teachers we have recruited for these gigs have all stayed and haven't complained.

Depends on the school, like most franchises.

Really, name them (the particular franchises). I will personally drop in and confirm that the teachers there have pension accounts with the NPS and medical booklets issued by the NHIC.

IF that is in fact the case I will publicly retract my statement and appologise.

As it stands to date, and from PERSONAL experience at MORE THAN ONE SLP school, I honestly do NOT believe you.

I work for an SLP.

I have full medical benefits with the NHIC. Yes, I have the little book. Yes, I've used it before. I know that it's real, and it works.

Our teachers have pension accounts. I know this for a fact because every teacher eligible to receive their pension back, has indeed applied for it and received it. In fact, the school drives departing teachers down to the government office to apply for it.

I'm currently teaching an average of 23 hours a week.

Half of our current teachers have extended beyond the one year contract.

I have never been paid a day late. I've never had a single problem with overtime, on the rare occasions when I've worked overtime hours.

I do agree, however, that there are some branches you definitely do not want to work for. I'd just like to point out that it's an untruth to claim that all SLP branches are like that. My boss is a really decent guy, and it irks me when people make broad statements condemning schools they haven't set foot in. Laughing

If the SLP you're working at is so good, you should let everyone know where it's located.

I considered it, but I've decided not to give out the name here for a couple of reasons.

Primarily, I'm a bit uncomfortable with giving out my exact work location to hundreds of random strangers on the internet. Laughing

Plus, barring emergencies, all our positions are filled until about April 2008.

My original statement still stands. Prove your claims and I will retract my statement and make a public apology.

I know for a fact that your (and all SLP contracts) read 22/23 CLASSES per week and the classes are 80 minutes long so I really do NOT believe your statements about 23 hours and I know many people who are CURRENTLY working at SLP franchises and are getting cheated out of medical, pension and their withholding taxes.

SO

I will also make you the same offer I made the recruiter above. PM me the location, I will personally drop down to verify your claims and then retract my statements and make a public apology.

I have NEVER been taken up on this offer and I have made it MANY TIMES when people come on here to say how good their SLP is. I don't expect you will take me up on the offer either.
