I heard that there are some drawbacks to the IPODS. What are they?
I heard something about not being able to transfer stuff easily or once you put them on the IPOD you can't transfer them. I don't really know... I definitely want an MP3 player by October... |

Basically the big problem with Ipods is that they don't last. After a year they start fo fade, after 2 you need a new one.
I have a Nomad Jukebox that I got in 2002, it is pretty big, but it still works like new, I almost wish is would stop working so I could get a smaller one, I will get a nomad again next time, or maybe some other brand, but not an Ipod, I've seen too many friends go through crap with them. |

most common complaint is battery replacement. it's expensive if you go through the official channels (authorized Apple dealers) and it doesn't last that long. if you're not paranoid about handling electronics, it's not that hard to replace your own battery (i've not done it with an ipod nano though).
also, using Apple iTunes with the iPod means it's easy to transfer files to your iPod but it's not possible to get files off your iPod. however, this is also a problem that can be easily resolved by using third party software.
lastly, it's not great value for money going by the technical specs alone. for the same capacity, you can always find a cheaper mp3 player from other major manufacturers like Creative or Rio. however the wheel is a pretty good design IMO and the new nano screen looks pretty nice as well.
i only bought an iPod shuffle because i really like the built-in clip (highly underrated, especially when working out). aside from that, i find the iPod and iPod nano nice, but not quite worth the money from my perspective. but it depends on the person, i'm really not the target customer for Apple products (people who are willing to pay a bit more for products that "just work"), since i'm quite a bit of a geek and don't mind tinkering with stuff (yes, i would rather use Linux (free!) than pay for OS X). |

| Ipods are easy to fix, battery and hard drive issues can usually be easily resolved by quick fixes. Crunchgear has a great ipod site. The Ipod is an input only device as far as music goes but there are work arounds for this (ie rockbox). The interface is the best in the business, the form factor is great and the audio quality is good. interface is the best reason to buy an ipod, as well as cost per capacity. If you want more features or a different design there are better players- for video the Archos jukebox is sweet but a 60gb is the same cost as an 80gb ipod, its bigger, heavier and the interface isn't as nice. |

xenok addressed all the issues with the iPod.
I was an iPod hater until I actually got one. I got a Nano and I love it. My only complaint is with the battery. The Cowon G3 (40 hours with 1AA battery) spoiled me.
Another big plus with the iPod is all the accessories available. You got speakers, cases, car adapters, backpacks, etc... all designed specifically for the iPod. |

You don't really need to limit yourself to an ipod, there are plenty of great mp3 players around to choose from. Decide what features you want, do a bit of research, and then make your decision. |

Thanks for the spiel, but could you tell me more about Rio and Creative...
I like the way IPODs look, but I have heard many complaints, but compared to what Koreans tell me they are spending on MP3 players, it seems like an IPOD is a much better deal. What is the best deal one can find locally. I think it's a serious drawback to not be able to take stuff off of an IPOD especially for people who don't know the ins and outs about getting around the system, like myself. I do appreciate the input.
What kind of cash are we looking at for a decent MP3 player that would take say 1,000 songs. I don't mind video. It might be nice to be able to watch some movies, but it is not necessary. I could do that at home.
I am more than open to looking at something else besides an IPOD, but I want something decently priced... |

And my friend still has his FIRST generation Ipod that is still going strong. |

well from Creative, i know that the Zen series are basically the iPod competitors. the newest one is the Zen Stone which is supposed to be an iPod shuffle rival. i know their Zen Micro was pretty well received, which is a rival to the iPod Nano. you can read more about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_ZEN
the Rio Carbon was a iPod rival that was highly rated. i had three friends who got it and they all liked it. i would have gotten one as well if i was in the market for such a large mp3 player (i'm someone who rotates his playlist quite often so i want more portability and less capacity). i don't know if you can still find it.
there's a Cowon player which is quite highly regarded on this forum. i've never used it but of what i've read and heard about it, it seems to be quite impressive.
i like iRiver for the fact that they support the most formats, but they tend to be on the expensive end of things, and the last i checked the price difference between Apple and iRiver is pretty negligible?
you can use your iPod as a portable hard drive. it's just not all that easy. all your mp3s that you store on your iPod will have strange filenames so you'll have to re-identify them using the id3 tags or use a third party software instead of iTunes.
as for the guy who mentioned his friend had a first gen iPod that's still going strong, that guy must have had his battery changed (they usually last two years max). and it's the battery replacement issue that drives some people away from getting an iPod. |

There is software around to make it easy to put songs on and copy songs off the Ipod.
eg Anapod Explorer v9.0.2 & Anagear v3.0.5 |

Get a Cowon iAudio G3.
Takes 1 AA battery and it'll run for 40+ hours off of it. Its small and lightweight. About the size of a zippo lighter. Best thing is you just drag and drop your songs onto the MP3 as if it were a USB thumb drive.
Other perks is the FM radio, Direct to MP3 line in/voice/FM Radio recording. |
