Ok, just curious what others who may have been there think. I am going to Indonesia, Jakarta and travelling around Java in a week from the 2nd to the 14th. Plan on staying in cheap accomodations and seeing as much as I can without rushing. My question is how much moeny should I bring? I am planning on changing about 200,000 to rupiahs before I leave. Above and beyond that I don't really know. Any ideas????

A good rule of thumb for south east Asia is $50 per day of intended stay.
Touristing - even as a backpacker is different than long term stays (which are MUCH cheaper.

You can probably do it on 1/2 that if you are very careful but it sucks to get stuck with no cash and no access to cash in a strange country.

If you take too much you can always bring the extra back. It's not like it will turn to smoke and disappear on the plane ride home.

If you run short you are fooked.

Yeah, I am worried about making sure I take enough, because, although they point at the cirrus mark on my bank card and tell me it is an international card I don't quite trust that. Have friends who were told that and ended up running out of cash that they brought with them and their "international" bank card wouldn't work outside of Korea.

Put $700 in your pocket and all should be well. It's not like 7 pieces of paper take up a lot of space or are too obvious. Fold them up and put them in the coin pocket of your jeans and they will be stuck there till you dig them out.

If someone does rob you, they may turn out your big pockets, grab your wallet and may even look for a money belt but they never look in the change pocket of your jeans (unless they read this Smile ).

JMHO.

Traveller's Checks are a safe way to carry money abroad. Not all banks will cash them but you can usually find a bank or hotel that will.

Really?

In my personal experience, in all my travels, 74 countries to date, I have found that, outside of the major centers and larger hotels the ability to cash a travellers check drops off to almost 0.

You can almost always find someplace or someone that will exchange currency.

Well, i have used them in Europe, Costa Rica, and the Philippines and didn't have any major problems. In Manila i had to visit a few banks before I found one that would take them, however, I never tried to cash them in the smalller islands, so i could see that it might be difficult to cash them there.

I remember cashing them for people at home when I worked in a grocery store in Canada and my Mom would use them when shopping in the States. Here though I think you are pretty limited as to where you can cash them. I am going to carry some in travelers checks, some in US$ and some in Indonesian I think so that I am covered.
