Why do you think that we are angry? You characterize foreign English teachers as unqualified yet many Koreans teach at hogwons without any training as a teacher. Some didn't even study English in college. Not to mention that some people without a BA work in hogwons. |

Do you have any reason to assume that if foreign English teachers went home early that they would write more ridiculous post?
Secondly, if foreign English teachers were giving more responsibility then they might do more work and contribute more to their school. |

I locked this thread because it is OFF TOPIC for the GENERAL forum and appeared to be getting a little warm with some of the comments and did not want it to blow up overnight..
If you guys (Not just the OP) can manage to keep it civil you can restart it in either the JOBS or off-topic forum.
If you post it in the JOBS forum and it even hints of warming up again I will lock it again. |

Actually, I didn't take him 100% seriously but have known a fair amount of teachers who didn't do much more than drink in Itaewon.
So his writing is biased and lopsided, I'm sure we've read enough going the other way. |

i've never been to itaewon, and i still agree with a lot of the negative comments about korea on here, you do get a lot of racist koreans, they do have a stupid belief that they live in the best country in the world, and take it as a personal insult when you point ways in which other countries are better, they do spit all over the street, etc etc
i quite like some aspects of korea, but some aspects i hate, and i wouldn't stay here by choice, why would anybody choose to live in korea for anything other than the money? |

| It's sad but I can't help but to stereotype Koreans as being completely ignorant of overseas Koreans, 'gyopos'. As a gyopo, I find that Americans are more understanding of me than a native Korean. At least Americans don't ask if I tried kimchi before or if I know how to use chopsticks. Come on my fellow Koreans! We have Korean parents! Where is your common sense! Don't you know how ridiculous and naive such questions may sound to us! It's one of the reasons why I'm more comfortable around foreigners in Korea than native Koreans. Sorry, but I can't help but to come to this conclusion that Koreans are totally ignorant on the issue of multiculturalism, bilingualism, immigration, etc. |

Where did you get the idea that Koreans think they live in the best country in the world? Are you talking about North Korea perhaps?
It seems you don't really know the Korean society and phyche. Koreans are not like Chinese or Americans that have strong patriotism. A research (sorry I can't recall the source) shows that Koreans hit the bottom when it comes to patriotism. Why would we think our country is the best place to live? Over-populated in a small land with no natural resources... still facing threat from North Korea... but not bad in my opinion. |

I don't know much about kyopos and their life in Korea except for those kyopo singers and dancers. But I would guess it be hard for them to adjust their life in Korea with double identities and double standards. I do hope you enjoy your stay with other foreigners in Itaewon. Thanks. |

i admit that i don't know much about korea, but from my students, they seem to take offence when I point out problems with their country or criticise it at all, maybe it's just cos i'm used to english people who are very self depreceating, but I have found koreans to be overly patriotic a lot |

You go to camp, but you can't start a fire because the sprinkler system will go off, get all the books wet, and possibly cause you to die of electrocution. |

I actually have no problem adjusting since I have many relatives living here. I just like to associate with people who are not totally clueless whether they're foreigners or Koreans. That's all. As for kyopos, there are a lot more kyopos in Korea than you think. Many of them live a double life in Korea and therefore, they are able to fool naive people such as yourself. I pass as a native Korean and most Koreans have no clue that I'm also American since I happen to be bilingual.
P.S. I never said I hung out with foreigners in Itaewon. Where did you get that information from? So all foreigners hang out in Itaewon? Look who is generalizing now?
