Everywhere I go in this country, every house I live in I seem to be surrounded by endless, incessant contruction.

I think I'm doing well to detach. I put my music up loud (although still not loud enough to drown out the tortous hammering, which btw, started at 8am)...and I get a complaint.

what the?????

Just last week we had a construction worker fall off a building under construction (across the skreet) - he fell six stories and hit a guy on ground level and killed the guy he hit. The guy that fell survived but is in critical condition.

Shocked

Yeah, the construction is insane. And they always seem to replace stuff with buildings that are as cheap and shoddy as the ones they tore down.

Well, the music isn't considered necessary, whereas the construction is seemingly unavoidable.

I've heard before that part of the reason for the constant and shoddy construction is that it's the only way to keep those types of companies in business. If they built quality buildings that last a century in Korea where there is practically nowhere to expand, there wouldn't be enough work to keep the businesses going. Not sure if it's true, but it kinda makes sense.

You might wanna try getting an mp3 player with noise cancelling ear buds. I can't hear anything when I've got mine in.

Same with the roads in and around Chicago. It's basically a mob racket.

What's funny is that when you look at a lot of the major cities in Asia and their impressive skylines, you'd be shocked how many of the unique skyscrapers were designed/contracted/constructed by Korean companies.

And the real kicker? They're built with central A/C in mind. For such a "space concious" people, those monster A/C units that crowd every building in this city seem like an awful waste.

You think construction is bad here? Just go to Beijing or Shanghai.

Four weeks ago on Korean cable I was watching a doco.(National Geographic) about the department building that collapsed and the corruption in the building industry it uncovered. As a consequence of that case, the entire building industry in Korea was investigated. What was discovered was that four out of every five buildings had to either be demolished or required serious remedial work. I'd like to think building codes and oversight has drastically improved since the 90's.

Good thing your posts in this thread aren't off topic.

You deserve nothing less than a breaking on the wheel for your hypocrisy, sir.

Building wise it's pretty quiet where I live.

Which is rather nice. It was rather strange at first not having the noise of cars stereos or cheap big bore exhausts rattling my house.

The wife can't believe how quiet it is.

Still haven't heard anyone bonking yet though, so it isn't that quiet.

That part about Korea's role in the construction work of other countries...does it imply that Korea does NOT contract with any other nation to participate in its own construction industry; that all good and bad is in Korea's hands?
