I was thinking about going to Thailand when I am finished with my contract and getting my TEFL certificate. I wonder if it is really worth the money, time and effort.

Is Korea one of the only countries that doesn't require it?

Couldn't you just go to the country you want to teach in and get a job without a TEFL? Would you be teaching illegally?

Do you make that much more money with a TEFL certificate?

Do you learn anything substantial from the courses? I heard they weren't that easy (at least not a cakewalk).

I am not looking to be an English-teacher my whole life but would like to spend some time in both Indochina and South America teaching. Let's discuss....

If you are looking at making a career out of teaching then it will definitely be an asset. You stand a better chance of landing the good university positions with it on your CV. It is possible to get those jobs without it but many employers prefer candidates with TEFL. I haven't bothered getting it because I am studying Korean and I don't want to make a career out of teaching.

It was some of the best money I've spent. If you want to teach for a least a few more years, the return on investment makes it a no-brainer.

i'm wondering, how much of that return is in the form of information and knowledge gained through completing the course work?

The Tesol cert offered by EFL-Law is a university(Pusan university) accredited course and it only costs a little more than $100.

If you mean, how much is the return in terms of money vs knowledge, I would say more in terms of knowledge. I've always taken jobs based on experience and not pay. I'm not that interested in money. If I was, I'd be doing something more profitable.

Yes, I will be on a beach in Thailand taking the course and travelling around on weekends and such. When I am finished I can pretty much go to any country. I am think about doing a little more teaching in Indochina and then head to South America and do the same thing. A TEFL under my belt would be nice.

Has anyone actually taken the course in Thailand? or anywhere else in Indochina? Any more information on good schools to take it? What to expect? Advice. I am planning on going in February 2008.

Not if you do it right. You won't have time. Plan your vacation before or after.

Yes, I did. I did the Text-and-Talk 6 week TEFL in Bangkok. Good value for money. I learned a lot. I recommend shopping around until you find a trainer you like.
