My money's on Dean Barker and the Emirates New Zealand team - they have consistently made the first windward mark... |

Best of nine races.
1-1 after the first two.
New Zealand lost the first race.
The boat that loses the first race has never won the Americas Cup.....so far!
...."NZL 92 came from behind today to snatch the lead on a thrilling race two of the Americas Cup match.
Alinghi had led almost from the start. But Dean Barker and the crew held their nerve, minimised their losses and waited for their moment...." |

Next race is 10 tonight? Winds 10-20 in Valencia.

And man did they take it when it came. That was a balls out first leg for Barker. I hope that's not all he'll be remembered for. That run home was pretty inspired as well. Poor Brad - "even the run was a difficult run". For sure. I figured Alinghi's afterguard would be pulling out waterskis - not this race. A good series - even if Sui 100 takes it. |

Holy cow what a third race. A surprising start, a dropped bowman (I thought they coulda pulled a Prada and at least splattered some blood on the bow, but no way), a screwed up 'chute drop, and a second win for the Kiwis.
Certainly not a dealmaking win, but a very encouraging one. |

Close racing for sure, lucky to get the wind shifts but also highlighting the risks of not shadowing the opposition in these match racing contests.
I reckon it will go down to the wire with a deciding race #9. |

Lucky, for sure. And I wish I had coverage of the cockpit to hear the conversation between Barker and Hutchinson as that start played out.
Sojukettle, have you got an online video feed that's better than the official site? I can't find one. |

And today, Butterworth to Baird: "Match whatever the Kiwi's do in an attempt to make gains". I thought of your comment when I heard that. |

I put these two boats as almost the same in terms of performance with perhaps Alinghi slightly ahead. It is so close that the start is most important and the boat that wins that should win the race, unless a mistake is made which allows the following boat to nose ahead.
The shadowing manoeuvres are critical to keep the boats in position. Taking the boat off in a different direction is normally fatal, but as seen in race two, sometimes it does work out - but definitely a high risk tactic.
NZ to win on Friday. A days break and with the experience of the past few days should see them dominate the next start.
Magic stuff! |

Holy smokes - I thought we had 2 lay days here, but no. Race 5 is on!
Magic: I totally agree. 10 minutes in and NZ is clinging to a 10m lead.
YeeHaw! |

Emirates turns the first windward mark. It's funny - I heard some Swiss guy yesterday arguing that Alinghi would take it because they had a solid victory in '03. He didn't seem to account for the fact that Russel's gone and NZ took Luna Rossa 5-0.
Uh-oh - Alinghi just did that thing they do downwind. A massive 150 meter lead now. I say massive 'cause Dean kept an 83 meter lead beating, max.
OOhhhhh. Ouch. The Swiss turn bouy #2 first and keep 100 meter lead upwind.
Alinghi takes it. Can't wait for the video coverage tomorrow. |

Well, let's hope the spinnaker doesn't explode this time. |

Well I'm just not impressed now. A blown spinnaker's one thing. But c'mon. The Kiwis were playing with a bit of an edge, since RASSEL's gone. But I dunno...
Arg. Tomorrow I guess we'll see. Bummer. |

I'm not really surprised, but I definitely am disappointed.
Alinghi keeps the cup until '11. |

I'd like to tap that d*cknose Bertarelli on the beak for certain. He comes across as such a smug, spoilt arrogant Euro that it's stereotypical.
we'll get him next time... |
