TWO DECADES... That's so beyond unacceptable it's hard to describe. The industry has made HUGE advances and they're still using fuel standards that are 20 years old? Crash testing, construction and just about every other standard has been raised to match the present day technology... other than gas mileage.
Then there's the taxes that weren't issued. This is an industry that despite literally world wide setting/historic profits, receives SUBSIDIES from American tax payers. If I was a yank right now i'd be outraged.
The power of big oil... remarkable. |
why tax the oil companies? I am no fan of them or capitalism. But when they have money they invest in new ways to drill for oil.
While it costs around four dollars a barrel to get a a barrel of oil from Saudi Arabia it costs about 40 or 50 a barrel to get it from deep sea drilling .
If you don't look for ways to get it from the US then you will have to get it from the mideast.When you buy oil from the mideast then you fund terrorism. It is up to you. |

It is the worst system - except for for all of the rest.
Do I know of a better alternative? no. But that doesn't mean I think it is a good thing. |

To pay for the peace and security the massive American military provides? The oil companies operate under their umbrella. High oil leads to high profits and also increased chances in international conflicts. It seems fair they should help foot the bill. |

Why not tax imported oil and put in place a high gas? That seems like a better solution.
We ought to be encouraging domestic production . If you want to make the oil companies pay for the security that the US miltary provides then put in place a tax on oil from the mideast and Venezuala.
Plus I am all in favor of gas taxes- the higher the better. |
