I fly from Korea after my year in eight days. Korea has been fine; it gave me what I asked of it, which was experience in the ESL field and a bankroll. The price it exacted from me a general disinterest in its culture (ho-hum) and a fervid aversion to most of its cuisine (gag-ack) was not an unduly high one.
If things go my way, I wont be returning. (If they dont, I may be returning for periodic short term contracts over the next few years.)
I find myself wondering, will I be among those who, though they no longer have any connection to ESL in Korea, cant quite break the Daves ESL Korea habit?
For some I time I feared I wouldnt be able to break the habit. For one, the Daves board that covers the place in which I plan next to be an expat is pretty damned weak. Something like 20 posts in the last four months. For two, some of you people on this board are just too fun to watch and goad.
But Ive recently found another, more active expat board in the country where Im going, one that doesnt havent anything to do with ESL, and its possible that one will prove to be my methadone for this one.
So, who knows? Ill keep my account open at least until its clear my hoped-for plans pan out. Maybe Ill keep it open forever but never post again, just so I can follow the stories of some of the people here.
Will Jinju ever get a heart?
Will Princess ever get a brain?
Will fiveeagles ever get courage?
Will BJWD ever realize that intellect isn't his strong suit?
Will Ddeubbel ever realize what a didactically tiresome bore he is?
More important, will STEVEMCGARRET and Gopher ever get to stay in Kansas, for ever and ever and ever, because theres no place like home.
Please, God, please, please, please let me resist posting on this board after I leave Korea. (A prayer, I have no doubt, that is echoed by many.) |

Damn you, you're no fun. Being a tease has been about the best fun I've ever had in this life.
All right, then.
Greece. |

Simera fevghis, avrio tha eise steen thalassa. Na eise kala.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Well, surely not to where it ALL started, but to where it starts for me. Even more so because my destination in Greece is Crete. And Crete is to Ancient Greece pretty much what Ancient Greece is to the Modern West. The sine qua non of everything that the West became.
That is, the Majesty of Rome resting on the Glory of Greece resting on the original inspiration that was Minoa (or whatever it was they called their civilization).
Anyhoo, yeah, couldn't be happier. |

Don't go, Daskalos. We'll miss you.
Don't go to that great Dave's heaven in the sky... |

Now stop it, or you'll make me blush, and a 46-year-old man has no business blushing.
Besides, are you sure that anyone once associated with Dave's ever really goes on to any kind of heaven? I thought a relinquishing of one's soul was one of the unwritten Terms of Service. |

Best of luck friend Yeah when I depart these shores in the fall, I hope to put Dave's behind me. It's a fun morning/before bed routine but I don't want to become like Otis, fighting all the old fights... |
