We have some friends flying in to visit for the Christmas break and are trying to tighten up some plans for skiing . . . questions is - which ski resorts here are the most affordable and least crowded? We're in Gwangju (Joellanam-do) Also, our skiing capabilities are pretty mixed... one experienced skier, one who hasn't skied in 15 years, several who have never skied at all (that includes me. Hopefully, there won't be any accidents... we don't have the NHIC, but that's an entirely different post!).

We've looked at some online sites for some of the resorts, but they seem pretty pricey. We'd like a day of skiing and one overnight stay around Christmas... any advice? Thanks!

Suanbo is nice for skiing. We went there one year for Christmas, on Christmas day in fact. Not too pricey. Plus the hot springs are there too if you want. Hills aren't too bad, wwe had several first time skiers with us and they all survived without injury, although one probably should have gotten hurt, but that was his stupid mistake. A rule for skiing, if you think you are going to fast, planting your poles into the ground in front of you is probably not something you should do. Never seen somebody flip over like that and not get hurt.

I definitely hope to go boarding this winter! anybody else have any input on this topic, any resorts have any particularly good snow? How does selection look for renting, particularly in the larger sizes (Shoe size 13ish and board 171ish?)

Thanks

Bob

Yongpyeong is the best mountain in Korea and will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Snow around Christmas time is usually bleak and most snow on the ground will be the man-made snow. Most of the difficult runs won't be open, but Yongpyeong will still still beat out the rest.

Sorry, can't help with sizes, but 13 US size may be difficult to find.

There are some Yongpyeong posts on my blog.
I've only skied there because everyone said it's the best.
It may be cheaper to buy a season pass if you are going to
ski more than a few days.

The last time I skied before coming to Korea
I said I would not ski again without a helmet.
I tried on all the ones at Emart and bought the
one that fit the best.

Be warned.
Not all sharp metal objects are properly
padded.
There are places where you could slide under
the fence and not be found for days.
They can groom the snow and create a meter drop
without marking it.
People will try to teach their kids how to ski on
intermediate slopes.
People will sit and chat with their friends on the
other side of a hill where you can't see them
until you hit them.
The ski patrol will lean their equipment against
signs so you can't read them.
The slopes are named after colors that don't
match their difficulty color code.

haha, thanks for the tip. I'll check into Suanbo. Also, one of our friends is from Thailand and she has never seen snow - can't wait to see her reaction.

Has anyone skied at Muju? Are there any places to stay outside of the hotel/condos at the resort? It looks pretty amazing and not too far from where we are...

Oh man, I cannot wait for winter. I'm an adamant snowboarder from the States... in fact I'm going home for my sister's wedding in a couple days and plan on bringing back a couple of snowboards when I return. Any decent boarders out there I can go with when the time comes?? I don't know anyone out here I can share my passion with.

Also, people are talking about season passes being the best deal. Any quotes of places somewhat near to Seoul people can suggest? Thanks everyone, strange thinking of snow during the hottest period of the summer haha.

My advice would be to not skimp out when renting your equipment. I went skiing once this past winter with my girlfriend (a ski instructor back home) and she nearly blew her knee out because of crappy equipment. Also, they gave her pink boots because she's a woman. She was mortified and was asking for different ones but they wouldn't budge. That's Korea!!!
