I like hearing about other people's home countries if its some place I've never been. I sometimes like talking to people about my home as well, but not often.
But do I really care? Naah. |

Good call. I hate the whole parrotted "Where are you from " line.
Often i just bypass it and don't say. Its soooo boring.
I suggest everyone adopt a new conversation starter on first meeting instead. How about "Where are you headed in life?" Its a lot more relevant after all. |

Ok I'm quibbling, but islands are artificial political constructions also. Go far enough back and that island was probably filled with hundreds of little kingdoms or whatever and many different languages/dialects. |
Or there just happens to be more than one artificial political structure on one island
i.e. Haiti and the Dominican Republic or Saint Martin (French: Guadelope) and Saint-Martin (Dutch: St. Maarteen-Netherland Antilles)

I like visiting my home country. I always dreamed of visiting far away countries when I was younger. Even growing up I only say my bothers and sisiters about 1 or 2 times a year. SO i can't really say I miss my family.
I'm from one country, I work in KOrea, and my wife lives in China. |

Imagine there's no country...
Yeah, I'd join that club but let's face it many people who choose to live overseas probably would. As a general rule, we tend to be more "global" minded. |

I don't see it as an issue of "pride" or "nationalism", it's about gratitude. Our forefathers built free and prosperous nations so that their descendents, you, could have better lives. I doubt they would appreciate their great great great great grandkids p*ssing on their graves by smugly declaring it makes no difference to them whether they were Australian or North Korean.
I do care where I'm from because it has provided me with priviliges that most countries do not give to their own citizens. Lucky - yes. Ungrateful - no. I won't be foregoing my citizenship anytime soon as I've seen enough of the world to understand very clearly which side my bread's buttered on. |
