How would you get from korea to philippines if money is limited but time is not? What would you do/see on the way?
I should have saved around 10,000,000 won by the time my contract ends in late October but this may have to get me back to the UK, too.
Any suggestions? |

I have used won as the currency for your convenience because you are from the UK and I don't know how familiar you are with US$ or Pesos (php). For your travels take dollars or Euros. Do NOT take won. You will need pesos in SMALL denominations for local use.
Tavel by sea (freighter transport) runs about 100k per day of the voyage. figure about 5 days for the trip. It is really hard to drive to a country of 7000 islands out in the western pacific so catching a train or bus is not an option.
An airticket to the Phils (not during Korean vacation month) runs about 550k OR LESS tax included. The cheapest and easiest way is to fly there.
How long did you plan to stay on the beach? You can live quite well for a million won per month. Convert your money to dollars or Euros before you go. You will NOT get a favorable exchange rate on KRW outside Korea.
A nice (2-3*) place on the beach (resort type) can be had for as little as 15k won oer day (less for long term stays). Places like Boracay run 3 times that. The resorts in Cebu are 6 times that much.
You can rent a small studio apartment for as little as 50k won per month. A nice 2 bedroom will cost about 250k per month. Out in the provinces you can rent a simple house for 100k per month or less.
If you are travelling around in the Phils (domestic travel) you should use the ferries. They are CHEAP and frequent. Pension houses outside metro manila and cebu run from 10k per day and often include breakfast.
Meals (filipino style) run 1000-1500 won per person including meat and a drink (instant coffee / bottled water).
Western restaurants run about 5k-25k won per meal. These don't exist outside the larger cities.
Pricing varies widely depending on where you are headed (much higher in metro Manila and much, much lower down south) and if you have a Filipina friend with you (you get local pricing instead of tourist pricing.
Hope that was a start for you. Good luck and enjoy your stay. You should have a great year in the country on 5-6 million. 7107 islands, 30,000 beaches and time to explore maybe 300 of them. You have your work cut out for you.

Thanks ttompatz, that's some good info. and you've got me really thinking how long I should stay for. I think I'll be happy on a beach, at least, for the few months until the rains hit hard.
However, what I was originally getting at was the pros and cons of taking the boat to China, travelling down to SE Asia and onto Philippines from there, what are they?
Obviously, the cost will be higher but (depending on where I go and what I do, that's where you lot come in) how much so?
With the thought of a quiet beach to look forward to tourist hotspots and big cities aren't entirely out of the question. |

I think it's a good idea and common sense to use KRW as the base currency to compare things.
Reasons:
1. we get paid in KRW.
2. we all live in Korea and use KRW on a daily basis.
3. unless someone else specifies it, not everyone uses USD, Euro or Pounds, so why use one of those and then convert it again? |
