My fiance and I are planning to come to Korea next summer after our June wedding. I've gotten a few contacts with schools by posting my resume here on Dave's and most of them are asking to see a passport.
That got me thinking. As I've never really traveled overseas and I've never worked overseas, how will I be able to make this work when my last name will be changing about a month before we are planning to leave? Is it possible to get a passport/visa with my future name on it? |

You can't. It takes nearly a year to get everything changed in all the records whre the government tracks you. I got married 4 years ago, but still haven't changed it b/c its too complicated to do overseas, not to mention having to have my passport changed while I travel alot, etc. Just wait. Its just your name. Do it after you settle down into your home country again. |

I'm with katbrains on this one. Just wait.
You'll have a helluva time getting it done here, and problems with your passport, visa, and ESPECIALLY your diploma aren't worth the hassle. |

my mom has a clinic and instead of adopting my dad's last name she goes by this:
Jane Doe
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
she kept her last name, but uses his with the mr. and mrs. stuff
(although soon it will be dr. ) |

Get the passport in your maiden name.
When you get married you make a trip down to the passport office and for a small fee they make an amendment on the amendment page to make note of the change of name to your married name.
This lets you have both names on record for things like this.
Your next passport you can get in your married name. |

ttompatz's advice is good...for your passport. But you also haev to change it at the courthouse in your county of residence first. That can take a couple of months. Then you contact the SS administration. They issue you a new SSCard. Then you take that to passport office. Its all a huge pain in the ass. I tried to do it when I only had about 3 months left in the country. The courthouse ladies told me it would never work and I just had to wait. |
