I spent the afternoon in Seoul during the day I noticed at least five people wearing Ramones T-shirts. The other day I saw an adjumma with a R.I.P. Sid Vicous T-shirt. Basically late seventies punk came out when Korea was still a military dictatorship. So where did all these punk T-shirts come from.

I'm not sure, but you can bet most of these people have never heard of these bands. Sid Vicious shirts have been around for a few years but the Ramones shirts are much newer.

Probably the same place where they found Doobie Brothers, Justin Timbalake, Jimy Hendrix(yes, spelled JIMY) and The Who shirts.

No chance the people wearing these shirts know any of these bands, maybe with Timberlake being the exception.

Last semester I polled every student who wore a Ramones t-shirt if they knew who they were (maybe about 25), and nobody had a clue.

In Korea, the thing is to have "Logo"-esque clothing on at all times. Doesn't matter if it makes sense or if it's even legit. Case in point: "FC Real Bristol".

No such team. Does it matter?

Korea was somewhat a textile giant in the 1970s.
Probably surplus from then.
Maybe some one found an abandoned warehouse.

i used to like asking random people what their favorite ramones song was and act all excited that they were wearing a cool shirt. never once have i got any kind of informed response. i like the recent influx of run-d-m-c shirts as well.. kinda like almost 90% of those adorned in jack skellington apparel have never seen the movie or even knew that it /was/ a movie. but you can't blame them. how many westerners wear chinese characters on their shirts without having a clue how to speak chinese or even what the characters mean? just cuz it looks exotic. same thing here i suspect.

When I was in Thailand a few months back I commonly saw loads of Thais wearing Chelsea or ManU jerseys. So, naturally, I'd walk up to them, look at their jersey, and say "Chelsea, yeah!" and give the thumbs up. Not one of them had any idea when I was talking about.

I've seen 2 or 3 recently as well. Also saw a few Clash T-shirts. Most of them looked cool.

Funny as all hell. All these people there wearing their Sid Vicious, Ramones, Clash et. al shirts....not a clue who they are. Icing on the cake, most of these 'wanks' probably listen to K-pop. Laughing

The few westerners I know who do this probably deserve the revelation that their Chinese character translates as 'Most Gloriously Ignorant and Trendy Foreign Devil', or equivalent. You are what you wear.

Most Koreans don't know what shirts say in English. One lady had a t-shirt about skinny dipping and she was a conservative lady. She had no clue what it meant. I bet she never wore it again.

My wife came home last night wearing a Ramones shirt. I told her to be prepared to have random foreigners testing her by asking her what her favourite Ramones song is. Then she said "I don't really like the Ramones. I liked them when I was young but quickly found better bands. They just didn't have Clash or Stiff Little Fingers shirts."

So there are Koreans out there who aren't musical luddites. They just happen to be married to me.

She also gave me a Ramones shirt which I'm wearing right now. Kind of hypocritical because it's probably my fault Marky Ramone isn't coming to Korea in September.
