Hi,

I'm posting for my husband cause he doesn't have a Dave's account. He is flying into Manilla on the 27th of July and staying til the 4th of August. I will be in the states visiting family and friends, and he will be on his own.

What he is looking for is a good place, not to far from Manilla, but definately away from Manilla, with a beach, scuba diving, that is cheap and relaxing. Also would be interested in a travel buddy if anyone is headed that way.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Puerta Galera's White Beach, Boracay Island, Malapascua Island, Alona Beach on Panglao Island, Bantayan Island, Apo Island, Camiguin Island, almost anywhere in Palawan.. those would be a start to look into anyways. ANY of those would be ideal.

The problem is that there aren't many places that are really close to Manila (as in driving distance). The places Tiger Beer mentioned you have to fly to or take a boat ride (although it's not very expensive to get a domestic flight, and well worth it if you want to go to one of the really nice places in the 'pines).

A few hours up the road is Subic Bay (Olangapo). The beach is nice and there is some decent wreck diving. However, in my opinion its worth getting a cheap flight to palawan or somewhere south.

For about 100k won (return) he can catch a flight to Tagbilarn, and head out to Alona Beach. It is also easy to catch a cheap flight to Boracay.

A room at Alona tropical runs 25k-30k won per night (breakfast included). they have a decent dive shop and lots of good diving to keep him busy for a week. There are a few restaurants to choose from and prices run from 1200 won up to about 5000 won per meal.

On Boracay there are lots of places. Beach, bars and diving. Just walk down the beach and pick one. Rates run from 15k won and up.

Hi ttompatz,

How does Alona Beach compare to Boracay. I went to Boracay 2 years ago and thought it was a nice place but got bored after 5 days. I've looked up Panglao island on the internet and it's located right beside Bohol which seems to have plenty to see and do. Is Alona Beach overdeveloped with large multi-storey resorts or is it similar to Bracay? Also are there plenty of restaurants to choose from on Alona Beach?
Cheers

If you felt bored in Boracay after 5 days, you'll be bored to tears in Alona Beach after about 2 days.

Significantly less restaurants, no live music like Boracay, and easily able to walk the distance from one end of Alona about five or six times faster than you can at Boracay. The sand and the ocean is as gorgeous as Boracay though.

The beach is what it is - a junior version of Boracay (in terms of resorts and facilities and size of the beach). There are probably 20 places each to sleep, eat and drink ON THE BEACH. There are others on the other beaches around the island and LOTS of options in the city (8000 won taxi or 800 won for a bus ride). Takes 30 minutes by cab or 1 hour by bus.

There is the usual mix of beach activities (diving, swimming, snorkeling, etc). In addition and unlike Boracay there is island hopping to all the little islands around Bohol, local shopping in the town markets (talibon, tubigon, getaffe, etc), ride up the loboc river, go tour the 300 year old spanish churches (takes more than a day) to see them all, hop over to Cebu for a day or 2 if you have the time.... only 10k won for the fast ferry and 2k won for the slow boat.

Market day in Getaffe is Wednesday, Tubigon is Friday, Talibon is Sunday/Monday and you can find all flavor of stuff to fill your suitcases with. The pension house is across the street from the Alturas Store in Talibon and costs about 10k won per night.

A v-hire (seat in a mini-van) from Tagbilaran (city next to Alona beach) to Talibon will set you back about 2500 won. If you are adventureous you can catch the bus for about 700 won. It will take a few hours for the bus to wind it's way up the island.

If you get off the beach you can easily spend 2-5 days exploring on Bohol. Most people only grab a day tour around the island or go shopping in the city and NEVER really get a feel for the island or the people. They don't know what they are missing.
