I actually have a Korean license, but I'm reading that I'd need an international license in Asian countries if I want to rent a car or motorbike. What's the easiest/best way to do this in Korea? Thanks. |

It depends on your visa.
If you are F2,4,5 then take your licence, ARC and passport to the licence office of your choice. Done while you wait.
IF you are E1,2,7 you must have been resident here for 3 years before they will allow you an international licence based on your korean licence. Same process. Drop into the local licence office. |

So, I have an E2 visa, but I haven't been here for 3 years. What can I do? |

Use your home licence?
Get an international sent from home via a family member?
Most places that I have been to will rent a bike and never check for a drivers licence anyway. It is only the car rental places that want to see it.
As a second comment, most places in SE asia, it is cheaper, safer and easier to catch a cab or hire a car with driver.
For example: Cebu city
- international rent-a-car company US $40 per day + fuel.
- hire a cab (car and driver) for all day - $5 per hour for as long as you want it.
- hire a bike $20 + fuel - no questions asked - leave your passport as security.
I encountered the same in Thailand. |

Here's the website for the American international permit. It is only
good when presented with your driver's license.
http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html
When traveling overseas, carry an International Driving Permit ... even if you're not planning to drive. Should you need to communicate with foreign authorities, this recognizable form of identification can help you get on your way more quickly.
Valid in over 150 countries, the permit contains your name, photo and driver information translated into ten languages.
World MapBefore you travel the world, travel to any AAA office for your International Driving Permit. Bring your valid U.S. driver's license, $15USD* , and two ORIGINAL passport-type photos** (also available at AAA offices). You may also wish to fill out our International Driving Permit application in advance. Simply print out the application, fill in the information requested and bring it with you to the AAA office nearest you. If you prefer to secure your International Driving Permit through the mail, enclose your completed application form, two ORIGINAL passport-type photos each signed on the back, a $15USD permit fee and a photocopy of both sides of your driver's license and mail them to the AAA office nearest you. Include additional U.S. funds for expedited return mail service, if desired. See USPS.com or DHL.com for rates.
NOTE: If you are currently overseas you can mail your completed application to the following office and address:
AAA/IDP
1000 AAA Dr.
Heathrow, FL
32746
Attn: Mailstop #28
*Funds must be in U.S. dollars. Acceptable forms of payment are U.S. bank check or money order payable to AAA and these major credit cards with expiration date- Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card.
