I was offered some morning work at a university in Seoul, and I approached my boss about it, since it was during hours that would not conflict with my primary job. He said he would check with immigration. Then he told me today that he found out from immigration that it is illegal for me to work at two jobs.
I thought that if I had permission from my primary job, and the appropriate stuff on file with immigration, it would be ok.
My boss said that only those with an e-2 from a public school can get a second job legally.
This is not what I had believed to be true. Anyone got the inside info? Any hagwon teachers with a legal 2nd job?

I was farmed out to another employer with the permission of immigration and my boss.
Cost him 70,000 won and 20 minutes of his time. Sounds like your boss doesn't want you to see the greener grass! |

He doesn't want to give you permission, so he saves face from saying "No" to you by lying.
Never believe the boss or recruiter. Get the info yourself. |

Your boss is lying.
The process is outlined on the immigration website. You can have up to 2 part time jobs but they cannot exceed your primary job for work hours and cannot conflict with your primary job schedule. |

If it is NOT on your ARC it is NOT legal. Your boss is also a liar and you are at risk.
Is he willing to continue bribing the official to look the other way AFTER you get busted at your other job? |

I went out for dinner with him and the immigration officials where this was discussed. Happens all the time.
No one can really legally teach at these big companies, but there are many doing it. Immigration doesn't bust them or the teachers that teach at them.
Get off your high horse. There's no other way for them to be taught save this situation. Immigration make exceptions. Immigration is God.

and that is why they allow E7s and LEGAL adjustments to your status of soujourn and when your boss quits paying the ball stops rolling.... it's YOUR ass in the sling.... Will you still support the practice then?
Just because corruption still occurs does not make it right.
We (collectively) complain that they ignore the laws when we get shafted but yet people like yourself condone illegal practices when it is to your benefit.....cheap morals - easy to buy and easy to toss away too.
If companies had no alternative but to do it legally they would lobby for the necessary changes to make it possible without putting ourselves at risk or requiring bribes.
You sir (and your ilk) are part of the problem and NOT part of the solution and I for one will NOT get off my high horse.

I signed a contract with a public elementary school last Friday, working two mornings a week.
Both my school's wonjang and the public school's principal insisted everything be legit, so did I, in fact.
Went to immigration Monday and got the mark on my ARC. No problems.
It is possible, and legal. |

Thanks for the responses everyone. Immigration's website was down yesterday.
I wouldn't put it past my boss saying whatever the hell he likes, although he is generally a good guy. On the other hand, I wouldn't put it past the underling who actually made the phone call to have messed up the details and made it sound like I was wanting to pick up privates or something...I can check myself on Monday I guess.
