I need some serious advice. I came to Korea several months ago and was placed at a hagwon that I definitely didn't like. After paying the school for my airfare I got my release letter and now I got a job offer from a public school. My recruiter is telling me that since I am already in Korea that it is against the Ministry of Education's policy to reimburse me for my airfare. I have never heard this and many people tell me this is false. Also, I think they are trying to avoid the 300,000 settlement bonus they promised. Should I look for a different public school or is this normal? |

Depends what's in the contract. I guess for a public school deal, the contracts are generic. They probably state that they'll get you to the school. If you're already in Korea, why should they have to pay for a flight that doesn't exist? Flight from point of origin. Get the picture? As far as settlement money goes? Well if that's in all the contracts then you should get it. They're putting you in another apartment and you need money to settle.
I'd go as far as saying that they should pay your transportation costs from your old apartment to your new one, but the contract probably states something about getting you to Korea from your point of origin. Be it your home country or some other point.
Anyway, I don't see what the fuss is about getting reimbursed for a plane ticket here. That was already paid for at your last school and a one-way flight back to your country is about the same price. Get it? They're essentially paying the same thing. Why should they fork out double? |

Your old hagwon paid for your airfare, you broke the contract so you paid them back, and now you want your public school to pay for the original airfare? Yeah, that seems REALLY logical. Maybe I can get my public school to pay for my airfare from 2 years ago since I paid for my own flight over to look for a job in person and my old hagwon never paid for that... |

You WON'T get the airfare from home to Korea. You were already in Korea.
As a new hire from inside Korea a public school WILL PAY the AIRFARE for your visa run to Japan if you need one. They will NOT pay for your other expenses while you are on your visa run.
They WILL PAY the settlement allowance typically within the first week of your beginning work provided they are your first PUBLIC SCHOOL position.
This is standard policy throughout the public system.
