Similar threads have been made, even by me, but who cares?
Some important things for me:
I had never used chopsticks. (Common in Newfoundland of course)
I never sent an email (1997).
I never really talked to a Korean or ever seen Hangul, or heard Korean.
I never drank freely in public or bought alcohol after 2 am in a store.
I had never 'been with' an Asian girl.
Lots more, but just to get the ball rolling... |

Pretty long list, but I'll try to be selective: Before coming to Korea I had never...
...taught anything. Ever.
...had a "real" job, with, you know, a decent salary.
...been to Korea, or anywhere else outside of the United States.
...had my own place.
...stayed out past dawn.
...been to a night club.
...gone on a date.
...kissed a girl (yay, I had my first kiss two months ago when I was 23!).
...seen or heard Korean.
...eaten Korean food or Sushi.
...had a cell phone.
...spent money freely.
...been called "Handsome."
That's enough, I think. |
Where are you from? |

Built my own computer
Been woken up by an announcement, complete with the BING BONG BONG BINGs, in my own apartment.
Paid for grocery bags at the grocery store
Used a bidet

Did your parents sense an impending nuclear armageddon and hole up in a bunker for 23 years. Becasue thats the only explanation for this.
Before I came to Korea I had never done a million little things. The things I've noticed the most have been ondol(why isn't this everywhere?) and air conditioning. Also using an umbrella. Other than holding one for my mom I had never used one before. |

I'd
... never been criticised for making the effort to speak the local language (like at my hagwon in my first year here)
... never been criticised for not having learning that language enough (...ever since then...)
... never been told I look like Clint Eastwood, Nicholas Cage, and Brad Pitt.
( ... oh, okay all right! ... like Brad Pitt with a beard,
like in The Devil's Own ...)
Oh... Hang on. Things that I myself had never done before, right?!
Hmm... okay...
I'd
... never taught kindergarten kids before.
... never drunk soju before.
... never learned to vehemently dislike kindergarten kids before.
... never been drunk on soju before. |

Things I had never done before Korea and still haven't to date:
1. Squat while talking on a cell phone
2. Have sex with a Korean
3. Eat gimchi before noon
4. Been dongchimmed
5. Get a hangover from soju |

I'd never passed out/been ill due to drink before I came to these blessed shores, nor had *I* kissed a girl before. |

Never received a massage from a nightclub bathroom attendant while at the urinal. (I tipped, of course. But that was after he chipped in the energy drink and the moist towellette on top of the massage.)
Never before received permission to drink and smoke in a taxi.
Never before realized how fun it is to get 'busy' in semi-public places.
Had never drank makkoli with monks in a Buddhist temple.
Was never well-paid to just show up and speak to people about the subject of my choice.
Good thread topic, Jajdude. |

You don't know what your missing, brother. I feel like you might be missing out.
Especially being dongchimmed. That is crucial for anyone's long-term Korean experience.
And sex with the locals. Equally, if not more, crucial. |

I had never before broken up a fight between two Korean women. Or two Korean men. Or a Korean man and a Korean woman. Or a Korean man and a foreign man. Or a Korean woman and a foreign man. Or a foreign woman and a Korean man.
Yet, I have now done this. I should start wearing tights and give myself a mysterious name. |
