if a teacher is slandered by their school - as in really outrageous statements as to their personal character being made (in writing and spread via emails) without basis - does anyone know if anything can be done? obviously this is part of a basis to create a hostile atmosphere for the teacher who the dir wants to fire - but still - what about if they are fired - anything then or is it even worth the time to try?
thanks.

If it's in writing then it's libel (and apparently in Korea it doesn't even have to be false) so the teacher should be able to sue.
I'd hate to be a foreigner taking on the legal system tho! |

I was wondering about this recently myself. What if your employer sends out an unflattering letter of "recommendation" and it results in you not landing a job? Is their any recourse for a foreign english teacher? Who would they need to talk to?
A friend recently applied for a public school job. Apparently the public school didn't like the letter of recommendation they got from our hagwon, which is especially vexing since they had offered to re-sign him. I guess now that he turned them down, magically, his talents as a teacher have been diminished. . .
Any suggestions? |

With all the animosities between us and "them," and "we" residing in their country as foreigners, do you actually believe we can really do something about being slandered? Come on now... |

| Get everything in writing and maybe you can do something about it. Just don't be disappointed if the Korean legal system fails to enforce its own laws. In theory, the law should be applied equally to everyone. In Korea, that is not the case. |

Not true. I have sued three people and had two successful outcomes. I'm in the process of setting up another one if they don't give in.
Rule 1 in negotiating never bluff.
How can you guys sit back and let people take advantage of you?
