Things have gotten a little better since an outburst I had awhile back, but the last week or so I've been up to my ears in messiness.
I'm apparently a boring teacher. I teach 6 year olds during the day, a few elementary after-school classes, and now a terrible twice-a-week 5 year old class.
When I try to be more creative in my approach, I always run out of time. Being a hagwon, I feel pressured to simply have pages colored or have letters written on pages.
I now generally teach to the text.
I've been asked what color crayon to use in a phonics book recently.
Do you ever run out of time when you try to, well, be a decent teacher?
Did you initially have this problem and fix it?

Good lesson planning and prep. I know most hakwon teachers just fall into the class with a book and cruise through but... prep makes all the difference.
40 minute class:
5-10 minutes for some motivational activity and getting sat down and organized. TPR song based stuff works wonders here.
15-20 minutes for your main activity.
5 minutes for cleanup.
5 -10 minutes for a closing song or story time. |

The best thing to remember that at that age, they need to have fun with their lessons. You have to set the ground rules, stick to them, and allow them to have fun in the context of the lesson. I have taught many 5 and 6 year old classes, and I've come to know that the parents aren't nazis about having stuff done perfectly. They understand that the children are young and still learning.
Just have fun, try to teach them a few words or a sentence each class, and the moms will most likely be happy. As long as the kid wants to go to class, the mom won't pull the kid.

Some people just shouldn't be kindergarten teachers. I know that all too well, as I'm one of them. |

Thanks for all your help.
As some of you might remember, I felt a little shorted on instruction.
Y'know, the standard "late arrival who didn't get training" thing. |
