Anyone going to watch the US v.s South Korea? I think it will be on 5am KT.
I'm surprised at all the good soccer nations not in this tournament. Italy, Germany, England and France are nowhere to be found. But North Korea managed to make it. |

This is due to how the qualifying spots are handed out to the U20 tournament.
it is a lot more of an even distribution to continental groups and also there are less nations up for grabs so always some of the bigger nations, especially from Europe miss out....
Comparison
Open world cup vs. U20 world cup
nations: 32 vs. 24
Europe 13 v 6
Most of the other nations have approximately the same representation. |

Saw the US-ROK game as well....
Pretty entertaining and the Korean teram definitively dominated the US for most of the game (shots being 17-8 I think)....but they lacked finish around the net and hit the crossbar at the 50th minute....
They are however pretty darned fast and as usual have endurance.
I was surprised by the overall quality of play. The two Korean strikers are pretty talented and this bodes well for the 2010 national squad if they can keep improving. That shot that hit the crossbar was preceded by a gorgeous bit of dribbling by the Korean player. They also have a decent long ball threat and were pretty accurate with the long bomb. The mid fielder (I think) #5 played a heck of a game as well.
The crowd was nice too....stadium looked packed to the gills and sounded pretty pro-Korean...then again the K-fans are usually pretty loud and cheer for the duration.
Saw the goal from Poland on replay and it was by all accounts a gorgeous free kick. Brazil (from the highlights) seems to have played to individually and perhaps the artificial surface took them by surprise somewhat.
About the absent nations..there are limited spots per region and as usual Europe is a tough proposition for a qualification. |

Canada got owned by Chile big time. The score was 3-0 but probably should have been 6-0. |

Thanks. I also found this article which explains it some more.

The reason is that the majority of European nations have historically put more emphasis and poured more resources into their under-21 teams, as opposed to their under-19 squads that compete at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Traditionally, if Italy or England has spotted a talented teenaged prodigy in their ranks, they have immediately streamed him into the under-21 team, even if he was still young enough to play for the under-19 side.
This player development strategy speaks volumes about how much European nations value their under-21 teams - a fact underscored by the presence of Italy, the Netherlands and England at the UEFA U-21 European Championship earlier this month and their absence at this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The under-19 team "is not a high priority for a lot of the national European soccer associations," commentator Dick Howard told CBCSports.ca.
Indeed, even though the 2006 European U-19 championship served as the qualifying tournament for the U-20 World Cup, England, Germany, France and Italy all fielded weakened teams and all of them failed to make it to the final round of the competition.
Europe's lack of interest in their under-19 teams is one of the reasons why South America has dominated the FIFA U-20 World Cup: Argentina and Brazil have won nine of the 15 tournaments since the competition was launched in 1977. Spain was the last European team to win the U-20 title in 1999.
"For a lot of the European countries, the under-19 teams are a low priority, which is completely different from South American nations like Argentina or Brazil, Nigeria in Africa, Japan in Asia and Mexico in North America. All of those countries make it a priority to maintain a strong under-19 program," Howard explained.
As a result, countries such as Spain and Portugal, who have underachieved at the senior level but between them have won the FIFA U-20 World Cup three times, are the dominant European countries at the under-19 level.
"Spain and Portugal see great value in their under-19 teams," explained Howard. "They see it as very important part of a player's development and training to become a professional. It's just a difference in philosophy."
Former Canadian national team goalkeeper Craig Forrest, who played professionally in England for 18 years, believes the European nations put less emphasis on their under-19 teams because they are afraid of burning out their players at a young age.

Joking aside, North Korea's youth side isn't too horrible and their women's side is pretty good (for Asia, at least). The women's side was Asian champions for three consecutive championships (they finished third in the AFC Women's Championship earlier this month after their equalizing goal against China was disallowed in the semi-finals).
I've also read that North Korean athletes are given a ration with so much in protein, etc. every day. I can't remember where that information comes from though. For all I know that could be straight from the Dear Leader's mouth. Unlikely, but as I can't supply any sources ... |

Impressive comeback by South Korea making it a 3-2 loss with two late goals. Also almost equalized at the end....these guys never do give up.
But, Brazil is Brazil!
The only way the Koreans can make it through now is:
US win over Brazil and they win vs Poland which would mean the US goes through with Korea.
As for the DPRK they are interesting to watch. Good work so far for them in the tournament.
The US basically pulverised Poland as Adu had a hat trick.
Interesting tournament so far. |
