The recent Glasgow attacks has got me thinking about how suddenly you can be a part of (or effected by) news events going on around you. A friend was to fly into Glasgow today. Another friend was in Bangkok Airport shortly after the tsunami hit Phuket in 2004. He saw plenty of shellshocked people. This same friend was driving on the way to the Hard Rock Cafe Casino in Florida when Anna Nicole Smith was found dead.

Personally, I was in the London subway when they mistakenly shot that Brazilian carrying a backpack whom police thought was one of the subway bombers. Also was a few miles away from the epicenter of the Mendocino, California, earthquake of 1992, a whopping 7.2 on the Richter scale. Cars bouncing uphill, light posts swaying back and forth.

There might be more, can't really remember.
Granted, nothing death defying, and I'm sure others have better stories.

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it does it make a sound.

If news happens and you don't have a phone camera.....

I used to be a news writer so of course I have.

Unfortunately the biggest incident I could've been witness to I totally missed out on due to domestic squabbles. I was invited to be on stage with Rux during Music Camp in 2005.

I was in Ecuador when they overthrew Lucio Gutierrez. That was maybe the 3rd president they'd overthrown in the last 6 years so it was really business as usual.

It was more interesting when Gutierrez dissolved the Ecuadorean Supreme Court as part of a complicated political deal to avoid impeachment and allow ex-president Abdala Bucaram back in (he was in exile in Panama). People went crazy over that. I got tear gas canisters thrown very close to me on my way to class.

If you're interested in crazy world leaders, look up Bucaram. That guy's a nut.

Hey,

I was in Thailand (Koh Phangan) when the Tsunami hit. I was sitting around the outdoor bar/restaurant enjoying my rum and Coke (I'm all class) when the bar staff turned up the volume on the t.v. We could see the footage of Sri Lanka and of Thailand. Every couple of minutes the death toll would go up. So, I went immediately to the resort PC room and e-mailed my parents and told them I was fine, that my island wasn't affected. Then, later that evening I went and got smashed at the full moon party.

The next day (once I awoke from my comatose state) I went to check my e-mail. My inbox was FULL of e-mails from concerned friends Embarassed Aw shucks, people like me. There was also one from my parents that read 'WHERE ARE YOU??'. So, I called my parents and they were pissed that they had not heard anything else from me. My Mom couldn't sleep. They knew were I was staying started with a 'P' and they thought it might have been Phuket but because I hadn't given them my itinerary, they didn't know for sure. I then got pissed at them because they were putting a damper on my holiday mood. It wasn't until I got back to China (near Hong Kong) and started watching the news that I realized just how bad the Tsunami was. I felt kind of bad then for getting annoyed at my parents.

This is a pretty mundane one, but what the hell....

I was in Tel Aviv when Sadat & Begin signed the peace treaty. Of course, Sadat was also signing his death warrant.

I was at my construction job when two guys got killed. These gigantic 4 tonne PVC pipes rolled onto them.
The sad part:
It was take your kid to work day.
The uber sad part:
His grandson was in the truck, about 5 m away when it happenned.
The terrible part:
The guy had actually retired the week before and was only at work this one day so that his grandkid could see what his job was like.

That was kinda rough actually.
