I have an external harddrive that is fairly new (bought last october). Unfortunately, when I plugged it in to my laptop back home, all the file names disappeared, but I have a feeling they are still in the drive, as the memory is the same (the memory that was being used has not become 'free'). Also, when I tried a playlist that uses the drive, the songs play, though I cannot actually view the song file.

Any clue how to fix this one?

In my case, I "built" my external drive by buying a regular HDD, plus an external case for it.

Thus, I had to install drivers and such, meaning it wasn't just 'plug 'n play.'

At least I think I remember it going down that way. I've only ever used it with one computer so I haven't had to deal with trying to use it with another computer.

Anyway, it could be something related to that... maybe?

I don't really know though.

Yeah...that happened to my 4gig thumb drive a couple of weeks ago...I simply reformatted it and now it's fine. I was more concerned that I'd have to toss it rather than the data aboard being lost as I only use it to transport stuff between my home and school com, so I didn't loose anything important.

Your other computer may be having a problem recognizing it as a drive. You may have to manually assign it a drive letter (since it is a harddrive). I had to do this before. If you need help doing this, let me know.

This is a somewhat common issue with external USB drives. But more info is needed from you, like what OS are you trying to use it on, do you need to install drivers?

They are supposed to be plug and play but sometimes they just do not recognize in some systems.

When you say the file names dissapeared, did an actual drive letter become available? Like E: or something.
