Hi,

I'm thinking of looking for a new job - would the start of September be a bad time to apply for Public School positions? How about after-school programs?

Also, in a nutshell, is it better to go for Elementary, Middle or High schools? (I've only had adult and elementary experience)

Cheers!

To my understanding, public school starts in late August, but there will be unfilled jobs to be had. Or will there? I can see a possible huge exodus from the hagwons taking place right now since the Korean government has initiated a big push to hire more English teachers this year and hagwons are mostly unpleasant due to the lack of time off, financial risks, office politics, and a heavy load of of teaching hours at 30 hours a week vs. 20 in public school with many repeated lesson plans. Public school has got to be a good gig compared to a hagwon.

It is in my intuition that you could get something this September though I would start applying now if I were you. If I was not held in a hagwon E-2 visa right now, I would be applying for a public school job right now while enjoying traveling to SE Asia and then home until the first of September. Oh man, 6 months to go for me, it sure seems like a long time, before I can travel. I am counting the days and it is about 4 months until I can get my new job search on....

Think of it this way. What type of students would you rather spend you day with?

You could apply for a public school postition right now. The posters are right that there is a big push for public school N/T's right now and you should be able to get hired within a couple days. One poster heard that my city is hiring last week and he has been hired already. Doesn't take long. On the other hand, a lot of the EPIK jobs are being taken by disillusioned former hogwon victims, and there is no saying how many more will be flooding in before September 1.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think after school programs are just random from school to school. My wife's school has one, -mine doesn't.
We like Elementary students because they are always happy, bright, and fun. Some prefer middle school students because they know more English but aren't as sullen as some High School students. If you like speaking lots of English and want students in a more disciplined setting than probably High School is the way to go. Also, the parents of High School students might invite you over in the evening to give their kids a bit more English help. So that could be a bit more lucrative "after school program".

I started beginning of September - no problems !!!

MIDDLE SCHOOL IS THE HARDEST !!!- STAY AWAY !!! ALSO, try not to get stuck out in the more rural areas because the kids are not as focussed as in wealthier areas. They just don't care about learning English.

Thanks for the help people, I appreciate the input.. suppose I better tidy up my resume a little. Will probably go for Elementary again, just because I've done it before and wasn't too bad...

Just a couple of months left of hagwon for me! Wink

EDIT:
By the way, if anyone knows of any good ones that aren't too far from Itaewon/Noksapyeong, please send me a PM!

Don't forget you will also need a medical check(fairly cheap in Korea) and a criminal record check. The school may hire you without one but they do need it eventually. Also if you don't have a tefl get one now, if you do it online make sure its over 100hrs then you can be bumped up a pay grade.

I think my middle school students are the easiest of the grade levels I teach.
