Me: my girlfriend's brother.
My girlfriend and I just moved into a nice apartment by the beach in Busan. Because of that and because he is going to move to Tokyo for six months, her brother came down to visit from Seoul. How did he get to Busan?
He rode his bike! Not his motorcycle. Not his moped.
His bicycle! It took him about ten days. He followed the east coast, and went South. He only ate rice and slept in his tent at night.
Thats my idea of a memorable vacation.
He speaks English well because he lived in Australia for nine months. He didnt hang out with any Koreans while he was there and thus, he learned to speak English (something many Koreans forget to do when the go abroad). He bought an old car in Australia and made money by picking grapes on vinyards.
After he returns from Japan, he wants to do two things: ride his bike across America, which my uncles have done and I always wanted to do, and participate in race in the Sahara.
Now that's cool. |

I knew a lot of Japanese who did that, the inspiration probably came from there.
I lived with one girl who rode her way motorbike from Osaka to Tokyo, got a few jobs working at restaurants just to fuel her travels then went to Hokkaido (north of Japan). |

My girlfriend is the only Korean I know who runs around naked in front of me. She gets my vote. |

My friend. But he's not really cool. Like in our regular meetings. Kind of annoys the hell out of me, really. He works for the government and stands up to his superiors. I think that's pretty cool.
I keep giving him advice. |

Coolest Korean I met was a former student I taught about 2 years ago. He was an international sales rep for a small tech company. Used to have great business trip stories from all around the world. Did a lot of trips to Central Asia, especially Kazakhstan. Told me how much he loved the place and hoped to travel part of the old Silk Road after he got bored of his current job. Real anti-ajosshi type of guy. Strange because he'd never studied outside of Korea, but I think all of his international travel had pretty much "corrupted" him. A lot more interesting than the other 'worker-bee' co-workers of his in the class. |

It would be hard for me to choose the coolest Korean I've met.
Probably from an objective point of view it would be Joohyun, the guitarist from Ghetto Bombs/Galaxy Express, formerly Rux and Captain Bootbois.
I think the guy who's achieved the coolest things is Jonghee, the lead singer of Rux and owner of Skunk Hell, who is the sole person responsible for the state of the punk scene as it is in Korea today.
My personal favourite is a skinhead named Jiwoong, a skinny guy who always wears the nicest clothes, drives the nicest scooter, is the nicest to everyone, but still somehow finds time to get in insane fights every week, often with multiple opponents, and always seems to come out on top. |

My friend that I first met in Australia while he was on exchange getting a graduate dipolma, Martin.
He's well traveled and knows English very well. And I'm always learning new things about him that I find really cool... Like:
He's got two masters degrees.
He is a certified ski instructor and is ranked around 140 in Korea for downhill racing.
He was a special forces captain in the army and was in charge of about 700 soldiers.
Totally down to Earth, really digs sarcasm, all around good guy... |

The coolest Korean I ever met is my friend Leona(husband is not really Korean, he grew up in Texas, so I say he doesn't count!).
She was an adult student of mine but now one of my best friends.
She used to drive a big Korando, fully outfitted for off-roading, which she did every weekend. It had a huge Harley Davidson Decal on the hood. She has one on her phone as well, which is black with flames on it.
One time when we drove to Hannam Market, she leaped screaming out of the car to plaster herself against the Arlan Ness Bike shop window and drool.
She had a small tattoo of a lotus on the top of her spine, which she had increased into a giant lotus and Chinese character tattoo.
She's back in New York for her 2nd year. 1st year she studied Classical French cooking, this year she is studying Pastry.
She's also absolutely gorgeous, but modest as hell and just the most wonderful person to spend time with.
We are naming our first daughter after her.
As an added bonus, Her younger sister is a belly dancer and photographer. |
