Korean pedestrians' accident rates were the highest among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries*, a local research institute said on Monday.
According to the 2007 OECD International Road Traffic and Accident Database announced by Green City Research Institute, 5.28 per 100,000 Korean pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2005, placing the country in first place.
Korea also topped the category in 2004, with 6.0 pedestrians per 100,000.
As for the number of deaths in traffic accidents per 10,000 cars, Korea took second place with 3.45 people, following Hungary with 3.79.

* There are 28 member countries.

The OECD average was 1.58 per 100,000, which is one-third the rate of fatal accidents in Korea.
Major advanced countries had very low numbers, with 0.51 fatalities per 100,000 in the Netherlands, 0.55 in Sweden, 0.83 in Germany, and 1.9 in Japan.
An official with Green City Research Institute recommended the government promote traffic safety policies in order to move beyond an underdeveloped country in terms of traffic accidents. |

I've never seen more inconsiderate, unintelligent driving than what I witnessed this morning.
It made me late. Insane. People not giving up an inch, therefore preventing others from shooting up side roads. Trucks bearing down on people trying to cross roads. Ridiculous.
Everything ground to a halt. My bus, which takes 15 mins on a clear day, took an hour and ten!!! |
