..but no word since, though the employer said he'd email a contract..

I was thinking of writing something thus:

"I was hoping to have received email confirmation and a copy of the contract from you regarding our meeting [the other day]. As I have not, you will understand if I proceed to negotiate with other employers.
Yours sincerely,.."

Is that cool? Does it look like I'm desperate/sulky? Is it unnecessary? Is the interviewer just sorta trying to let me off the hook (like saying 'yeah, We'll call ya...')?

Surprised

Actually you really don't officially have the job until you have an E-2
visa stamped in your passport.

Until that point you can back off. I also know of numerous situations where foreigners have had the rug pulled from under them.

I think that it is reasonable to ask a question ... but I would probably not word it in the way that you have.

Perhaps consider :

I have not received the contract for the job which you were going to email to me after the interview.

If you have already sent it to me, can you please send me another copy as I have not received it?

My correct email address is : XXXXX @ XXXXX

If you have not sent it yet, can you please send it to me as soon as possible? I am very interested in the job/working there and want to start working my way through the red tape involved in getting the visa.

(If I do not receive it within the next 2 days I will need to start talking to other possible employers) possibly include.

I would suggest this type of approach because it starts from the perhaps something has gone wrong ... I want to the job ... Keen to get moving ... rather than maybe they have changed their mind ...

I said possibly include to my last sentence because you incluced a mention of it in your email ... but I would consider not including it in this email ... but if you do not get a reply with the contract in the next couple of days ... then send another email which talks about speaking to other possible employers ....

It is not certain at this stage that they have changed their mind ... so I would take the "keen to get moving" haven't got it yet approach ... and only talk about the "speaking to other people" line if the first one doesn't work ....

Other than the standard follow up e-mail...

'Thank you for ...blah blah...I look forward to..blah blah...

continue your job search...something better might come up.

If/when they do send a contract...take it or leave it.

I wouldn't contact the employer asking for the contract..

if they are 'stringing' you along already..do you want to work for them?

4000 positions opening up in the next 60 days...

Do you really want to work for a school that is that disorganized?

Unless it is something spectacular like Seoul National University, 40 million per year and 24 weeks of annual vacation, move on.

Thanks for the replies, esp. Icicle, you have understood my concern perfectly. Thanks for the example letter - just what I needed.

I think part of the problem is that they may still be working out *many* of the details of the program, let alone the contract..

I wondered would it be better just to sit tight and carry on applying to other places, but a) that might mean I'll have to miss out on/turn down positions because I might in fact want later and b) I'm impatient.

So, I wrote much as icicle suspected and put in a note about understanding his position regarding the organization of everything and asked for a estimation of a date when we could get the ball moving (but not in those words exactly).

I hope it's not to pushy, but he has got to understand my position, too, huh?
