I did it.

I went to a jjimjilbang and here is my report:

I entered the place and got a towel, shorts, key, and a t-shirt. My GF and her mommy went into the woman's side, and I followed. They turned around and said "No no no! You are not a girl". Me? "I was hoping I would pass for one..."

I get in there, take my shoes off and put them in a little shoe locker. Then I take the key to the main changing room and give the key to the man behind the counter. He gave me a new key for a different locker.

I walked around, watching all the Korean men and boys swing their trumpets at me. I bit shy, I went to my designated locker, undressed, and covered my trombone with the dinky little towel they gave me.

I went back to the man, and got a razor, toothbrush, and asked for some soap. He told me all the showers already had soap.

Great. I have to use someone's used soap.

So I enter the shower area, and start to shower (back to everyone who are trying to get a glimpse of my musical instument).

Then, feeling a bit brave, I stoll into one of the hot tubs. A little boy turns to his friend (or brother) and says "Wa! Balgagsaeng tal!" and they both start to giggle.

I told them "sangwan hajima!" and did a little swim around the hot tub. Then after 5 minutes of listening to Koreans talk about my "moonshin", "gochu", and "tal", I decided enough was enough.

I got out, dried up, and put on my rented shorts and T-shirt.

Then I decided to have a smoke, but I recalled that my GF's mother hates the smell of smoke. So I undressed, went into the smoking room, had a few puffs, and went back to the shower.

After doing the 3 Sh's (sh**, shave, and shower), I re-clothed myself in the shorts and T.

I went upstairs to a common area where there were males and females of all ages.

Yes, folks. As you can imagine, all eyes were on me.

My GF and her mother were nowhere to be found, so I decided to explore. Finding an exercise room, I used some of the equipment. The one I had never in my life seen (except for Saturday morning cartoons) was this machine that has a towel attached to it and it kind of buffs your body. Strange thing indeed!

There were three hot rooms, a cafe, massage room, a TV room, a restaurant, and an ice room. Intriqued, I went into the ice room.

After...oh--3.6 seconds of freezing my ass off, I went back into the common room.

We sat down, and ate some hard-boiled eggs. My GF's mother warned me not to eat so many eggs. My GF laughed because she explained in Korea, they believe hard-boiled eggs increases your sperm count and randiness.

My sleepy-head GF took a nap, and I decided to watch TV.

As I sat down to watch TV, the room started to empty out. When I got there, there were perhaps 12-16 people watching some drama. After 2 minutes, the room was empty except for me and one girl.

And that's when it got interesting.

I have walked into a womans sauna by mistake....I went up to my locker and keeping my eyes to myself started to quickly undress Id got my top off and was a bit miffed that the bloke next to me was just staring at me.
When I stared coldly back at him I found myself looking at a naked sixty five year old lady.My first thought was "what is this naked old lady doing in the mens sauna..." Then I looked around and saw fifteen other naked women milling around the changing rooms oblivious of the intruder in their midst. My second thought was"sh*****T!" and my third thought was "run!!!!" which is what i did.

Yep I love em JJimJil bangs and these days almost all Mogyuks that
want to stay in business are converting to them because..well
this is Korea and if you have one thing on the block today there will
be 10 copies of it on the block tomorrow. Smile

For complete newbies to go to such a place would be
a daunting or at least limited experience as in almost all cases the signs are
only in Korean and the English is nil.

Sorry folks.

Part Two:

The girl sits right in front of the TV, making it quite impossible for me to see the screen. So I ask her if she wouldn't mind moving as there is someone behind her.

"Oh! I not see you! Solly!"

Rolling Eyes You can imagine what is going on inside this head of mine. "OMG, please! How do you NOT notice a half-naked white guy who you made eye contact the second he walked into the TV room?"

She not only moves out of the way, but sits right beside me like we have been the best of buddies for a decade.

Now, two things are going in my head. One, my girlfriend or her mother are going to see us sitting so close together and it will stir some contraversy. The second is that this girl now has a noticable odour of some intoxicating beverage.

We do the same old routine we all face when meeting a new Korean. "Where are you from? How old are you? Why did you come to Korea?".

When I get to the part where I am "Here with my girlfriend and her mother" she gets much less chatty, and lies down on her stomach in front of me facing the TV.

It is at this time when my girlfriend comes into the room. Just as she sits down besde me, I notice that the girl in front of me is inadvertantly displaying what is under her baggy rent-a-shorts. It is at that exact moment when my girlfriend also notices me noticing that fact.

She frowns, hits me, and leaves the room.

Annoyed, I follow her to explain the difference between simply "noticing" something and "staring" at something.

Fortunately, she is the understanding type, so there were no tense feelings afterwards.

After an hour in the exercise room, ice room, friggin hot room, and lounge, my girl fell into a deep slumber.

I did some Hanguk mal studying, people watching, and yoga (yes folks, GWoW does yoga).

An hour later, I too nodded off only to awaken at 9 AM to a bunch of Koreans telling everyone to get out for cleaning time. My GF was nowhere to be seen, but we met up later in the morning to take our next adventure to Everland.

So, basically, to answer some peoples' unasked questions: Yes. You can see a woman's private parts in a jjimjil bang without even looking for it.

Just make sure you're not with your girlfriend and if you are, hope she is understanding as mine is.

Hey, I just went to one of these yesterday. The one near the really tall building in Ouido. It was nice, we went during the day and it was mostly old housewives and a few toddlers until about 4pm when the students started coming in. But they charged for everything on the inside, no free eggs, (okay three for a buck, but that's not free), and they charged o-chun for bibimbap! I mean really, it's just panchan and rice!

They had five different hot rooms and one ice room. The ice room was neat until I realized that all the condensation in there was from about a thousand people sweating... And they had separate rooms for men and women to go lie naked in a kind of baking catacomb.

The first hot room we went to was like a pottery kiln and I think they had the heat up waaaay too high. I thought I was going to die and had to get out of there after three minutes. The girl I was with was laughing at me and saying how much her nephew liked that room. But it must have been 140 degrees celsius in there! Shocked I didn't see a thermometer but the room that was 80 degrees was really comfortable in comparison.

Actually, besides jimjimbangs, the only real mixed saunas/hot springs where boy/girl can frolic together are "bubu-tangs" (bubu = married couple, but not exclusive to marriage). I went to one in Onyang a few years back.

How much are "bubu-tangs"? and any in Seoul?

Is it clearly marked? I'd like to find a good chimchilbang south of the Han River. (But not too far out). Ouido is acceptable.

The one time I went it was near City Hall.. but have absolutely no clue how to find it again. Saw the reference that Harpeau has for Pongwasan, but simply too far away.

Anything around Seoul National University area? Or even more specifically around Sillim area?

This is gonna be a dumb ass question from the newbie, but...

If you're walking around this place and there's women, some of whom are presumably attractive, ever have a problem with showing off a little too much?

I mean, half the time the damn thing has a mind of its own...
